00:00 Hey American Salon, Daniel Mason Jones here at MUSE Salon and Spa in Atlanta, Georgia.
00:05 And I am super excited, I've actually been anxious all day long to join you guys right
00:09 wherever you are to show you a couple of really quick tips to get you through the holiday
00:13 season.
00:14 I know for me I'm super busy behind the chair all the year, but especially this time of
00:19 year I feel like maybe the clients want a little bit of extra love and that's great.
00:23 There's a lot of holiday parties and fun events.
00:26 So I have my beautiful model Sydney with me tonight.
00:30 We're going to be showing you a couple of really cool and effective fast techniques,
00:35 what we did with her hair, how we walked through step by step, and I'm just going to show you
00:38 some really quick ways to take this home.
00:41 So hope you guys are as excited as I am and I'm going to introduce you to our beautiful
00:45 model Sydney.
00:46 So we took a before picture, if you'll just hold that up.
00:51 As you can see she has super fine hair, it's the type of hair that doesn't really hold
00:55 curl and the texture on it is super, super fine.
00:58 So I wanted to go in and build a really beautiful foundation using Hollywood Waves by L'Oreal
01:02 Professional.
01:03 These are two of my favorite products, thank you.
01:07 So when we were building the style tonight I want to show you exactly what we were using.
01:10 I used the Sculpting Lotion here, this is amazing.
01:14 I put it in just before so that we could build volume and then we have Sweetheart Curls,
01:19 this is an amazing spray that we set it with afterwards.
01:22 So I'm going to walk you through and I kind of want to show you two different looks because
01:26 there's a lot of times in the salon we do a lot of foundational blow dry sets here inside
01:30 of our salon, but when you need that extra little bit of boost for volume it's always
01:35 great to use an iron.
01:36 I typically work with a Bio-Ionic iron, so we used a one inch barrel tonight.
01:41 It just did a really quick set, we didn't try to go for anything super fancy, I just
01:44 wanted to get volume in her hair.
01:47 So I'm going to actually start to deconstruct this look now.
01:50 The set's in, we've had it setting for about 30 minutes and you guys know that we need,
01:54 sometimes you get a really strong set about 30 minutes to get the bonds to really gel
01:57 back together after breaking them down.
02:01 So I'm going to start to take this down and you guys are welcome to ask as many questions
02:05 as you would like.
02:06 I would love to hear where you're joining us from, let me know who's watching.
02:12 So we're taking this down now and I'm going to brush everything out at the very end.
02:19 We've set everything back on 35 degree angles going backward.
02:22 I didn't really want to build a lot of volume here.
02:26 The emphasis at the end that I wanted was to have a really strong voluminous look across
02:30 the top of the head and you'll see where we're going at the end.
02:37 This season's been all about waves.
02:40 For one, I have really good ears and just being able to manipulate different shapes
02:43 and forms of the hair, I think it's very sexy and feminine.
02:47 And especially again this time of year, I know there's been a lot of crazy trends.
02:51 I've even seen the trend of the wavy brow, which I'm not necessarily into that one, but
02:55 I do love wavy hair.
02:57 You've got them from all over Santae.
03:03 Hi guys.
03:04 Thank you.
03:05 Texas and Maryland and even at Ford.
03:08 I love it.
03:10 All of our people are in the house.
03:11 I know a lot of you guys are probably still working and you'll catch this video later
03:13 tonight.
03:14 If you like what you see, by the way, give American Salon a shout out.
03:18 Share this video.
03:19 Let people know what you're doing.
03:21 These are going to be great, great tips for you to see inside the salon.
03:24 As you can see, I'm not doing anything tricky.
03:26 We're just taking down the barrel curl sets that we have.
03:28 And we did set everything on a traditional own base set here on the top.
03:39 So the first look that I'm going to do with you guys tonight, so I'm going to drop all
03:42 of the hair down.
03:43 I had originally thought about pulling this hair back into a sleek ponytail and creating
03:47 a really sleek look with volume on the top, but we're actually not going to do that right
03:51 away.
03:52 I'm going to give you a really fun look.
03:54 So I'm going to start going into the hair just in the same form that we had the sections
03:59 for the set.
04:00 I'm going to go in and just give this, this is just a regular fine tooth comb.
04:04 I don't like to make things complicated.
04:05 I'm just going to give it one or two pushes at the base.
04:08 As I start to base in here, you'll see the direction.
04:13 It's just the base is where you want to make sure that it's going back in the same direction.
04:17 So if I were doing a haircut and I wanted to preserve length, obviously we know we need
04:21 to over direct back.
04:23 So I'm going to bring this back into a formation at the end that's going to be a secure ponytail.
04:32 What are some of you guys' challenges in the salon?
04:35 Give me lots of questions.
04:36 Ron, you are one of my biggest inspirations in styling hair.
04:44 Thank you so much for watching.
04:49 This is one of the greatest things about the online community and all of our social network
04:54 channels is that we're able to really go in and see each other's work and inspire each
04:57 other.
04:58 I think as hairdressers it's really to really help each other out, inspire each other, make
05:02 sure that we're commenting positively on each other's posts and just kind of sharing the
05:07 love.
05:08 Our industry, I think we're in the most, actually I know that we're in the most amazing industry
05:12 in the world.
05:13 So I'm just going to keep working through these sections.
05:20 And I'm pushing it back.
05:21 Now I'm going to start to release the top section.
05:24 You guys can see that we're just starting to build a really beautiful shape.
05:32 And now we're going to work off the crown.
05:33 So as I work in the crown, I was really trying to push one over into something very, very
05:38 glamorous.
05:39 I know for me, when I first started out as a hairdresser, I had a lot of problems trying
05:47 to get the hair to hold.
05:48 It would look beautiful inside the salon.
05:49 And then before the client would leave, it seemed like their hair would fall.
05:52 So basically always pushing myself with advanced education and learning the foundational setting
05:57 of hair.
05:58 And being a L'Oreal professional artist for so many years has allowed me a lot of opportunity
06:03 to know really how to manipulate all the different hair textures and what products to utilize,
06:08 whatever brand you're using to really manipulate.
06:12 So how many of you guys are loving this look so far?
06:15 Veronica Lima wonders, "Needing help creating a beautiful entree look above and beyond a
06:28 traditional blowout without needing an extra 20 minutes of ad hoc or any good suggestions?"
06:33 This is a really great technique.
06:35 Again, we just went through with a barrel iron and set on horizontal sectioning.
06:39 We really went off of the center brow to the crown area, and then we took everything again
06:44 back.
06:45 And we got just a really fast look.
06:46 A lot of my clients, they would personally love to have this look leaving the salon.
06:49 We live in Georgia, so we love beautiful, sexy hair.
06:52 Of course, we do the fun, edgy hair also.
06:54 But this time of year when you're putting on beautiful cocktail dresses or gowns, this
06:59 is a gorgeous, gorgeous look.
07:02 And of course, we could take this over.
07:05 There's really nothing that you can't do once you get that perfect set in there.
07:08 And for her, having the right products in the foundational set, we can make sure that
07:14 she could wear this look again tomorrow.
07:18 So I'm actually going to start working into another style here, going from just something
07:23 sleek that she could wear out with her girlfriends to something that's really amazing for a night
07:28 on the town.
07:31 It's really easy for me to go back through and find my sectioning also because I kept
07:35 everything nice and neat as I was sectioning it out.
07:47 And just clip this out of the way.
07:51 I love working with volume.
07:56 I think that's actually been one of the most fun trends that I've seen happen this year
08:00 is to see that voluminous hair is starting to come back and the big curls and the unraveled
08:04 textures.
08:05 It's been really great.
08:07 So what I'm going to do now is I'm actually going to go in and use Infinium 3 by L'Oreal
08:11 Professional.
08:12 This is a great spray.
08:14 And I'm going to spray it lightly away from the head with the direction of the hair growth.
08:20 I'm actually going to start to go in and manipulate this texture just the way any flyaways.
08:26 Now if I want to add those for something more editorial or a little more fashion forward,
08:30 I could go in with a makeup brush or a comb.
08:33 It's all about having different and various techniques in your toolkit so that you can
08:37 manipulate the hair.
08:40 And I love to work with a can of hairspray instead of my hands a lot of times just to
08:44 keep from the tackiness of my hands from messing up the style.
08:50 So we're working through.
08:56 And I just want to really push this hair back.
09:00 I'm going to start to secure it into a ponytail that's going to be a little bit more high.
09:10 So what questions are coming in?
09:12 Lots of encouragement.
09:15 Thanks guys.
09:17 I can't wait to go back through after a while and read your comments.
09:23 I promise to respond to each and every one of you.
09:36 So what I'm doing now is I'm just really getting this into a ponytail.
09:39 And again, I'm not going for something like super, super couture.
09:43 I just want something very fun for a night out.
09:47 And I really like to work, if you guys see the jawline here, I like to keep my lines
09:50 consistent.
09:52 So I'm working all.
09:57 And I personally love to work with hair bungees inside the salon versus ponytails.
10:02 These are amazing.
10:03 They're hard to find, but they're amazing.
10:06 And I'm just going to latch this in.
10:07 I'm going to spin her around so I can show you exactly what we're doing.
10:10 I'm just going to slide this under, keeping it pretty tight with my hand against the head
10:16 so that it doesn't slip away.
10:21 And you want to make sure this is pretty tight.
10:23 And what it does is it just hooks.
10:25 I will check this a couple of times.
10:27 And when I start to do all that I'm going for tonight, I'm actually going to be able
10:29 to manipulate this hair and work into it.
10:36 So now what I'm doing is I'm going to start to take sections going horizontal toward the
10:41 front.
10:42 And as I take these sections, I'm going to backcomb probably four to five pushes, especially
10:47 right here in the crown area.
10:50 I want to build a nice, nice piece of volume just to overlay here.
10:55 You guys are just joining in.
10:56 We did a really fun Hollywood look earlier.
10:59 It was just nice soft waves.
11:02 Now I've taken that style down, deconstructed it, swept it into a nice ponytail.
11:06 We're creating a lot of volume through the crown.
11:09 I'm going to create a lot of volume through this top piece here.
11:12 And there we're going to have a lot of fun with something new.
11:23 So you can take your sections, the smaller they are, the more.
11:27 And we can start, once this is down, we can start to do braids or twists or whatever type
11:30 of look you would like.
11:33 Shape of her face.
11:34 And that's really huge, guys, is working off the shape of the face.
11:37 I'm going to spin her back around and show you.
11:41 First of all, she's gorgeous.
11:42 But as we start to work through the shape, I wanted to really play off of the cheek and
11:46 jaw line and really emphasize those gorgeous eyes.
11:50 So we could either, number one, do a heavy sweep off the front and be very playful, or
11:55 what I'm going to do is just keep coming back for something a little bit more messy.
11:58 If you guys are liking what you see, give us some love.
12:08 So I'm just going to keep working out these sections as I go through.
12:12 And for this particular type of spray, it's buildable.
12:16 So I want it to be pliable as I work and manipulate these sections into the style that I'm going
12:20 for.
12:21 So I could change this as many times as I would like, just because there's going to
12:25 be a lot of movability still to this style.
12:37 And the volume moving back, I'm going to give it another dust of spray.
12:40 I'm spraying it about 18 inches away from the head, just because I don't want it to
12:43 build up again.
12:44 I want to be able to manipulate this and play around with a couple of different shapes.
12:56 You can see that I'm really starting to work this shape through the front.
13:02 She's really got an amazing profile for this particular look.
13:07 And again, because her hair is very fine, there's not a lot of hair, but you can create
13:11 these looks to make it seem like she does have a lot of hair.
13:14 I work with a lot of hair pieces and extensions inside the salon too.
13:18 So this is a great way to talk to your guests about really upgrading their experience and
13:22 adding in extra hair.
13:25 I know once they get a little bit of hair in their head, they want more.
13:28 So we all know they become a little bit addicted, just like Balayage.
13:34 And we're just going to keep working this section through.
13:37 We've got a professional barber who's excited to try some mannequins.
13:44 Really?
13:45 That's so cool.
13:46 So yeah, try that and tag me, Daniel Mason Jones.
13:49 I want to see what your work looks like.
13:50 I love to be inspired by you guys too.
13:52 I think barbering is one of the most beautiful arts out there.
13:55 And what's been really amazing, I feel like from social media in the past two or three
13:59 years is to see the marriage of barbering into the cosmetology world.
14:03 So I feel like our worlds are actually starting to play together, which is amazing because
14:07 there's so many beautiful things done in barbering that we're starting to implement as hairstylists
14:13 behind the chair.
14:14 We may not be able to use our razors legally, but we definitely get inspired by your work.
14:18 So that's really cool.
14:23 So how many of you guys are liking what you're seeing so far?
14:29 And I also love to sew here in the salon.
14:31 I'm not sure if a lot of you guys are using sewing techniques, but you can go to your
14:34 local craft store and get like, you could do different color threads or you could do
14:38 clear, but I love to sew inside the hair just to create some really amazing textures.
14:45 Now this look that I have going now is a little bit too solid for me.
14:48 If I were doing something more editorial, I might like that, but I want to have a little
14:52 bit of lived in texture here.
14:54 So I have another product that's one of my favorites I'm going to use in just a minute.
14:58 It's a texturizing powder and it's silicone.
15:02 It's absolutely amazing.
15:04 You don't need to use a lot.
15:05 I just kind of smoke it through the hair just to add a little bit more text.
15:12 It just gives it like a really amazing grip to the hair.
15:15 So really fun to work with in the salon.
15:17 This product, if you guys are wondering, it's called true grip grip and I've been using
15:22 it for a couple of years and I absolutely love this.
15:25 I feel like every woman should probably have this in her purse.
15:27 And even you guys that have cooler textured hairstyles, this is amazing to mix with a
15:32 pomade.
15:36 So I'm going to start going in and doing some really fun twists off the top.
15:39 I love the volume that we have here.
15:41 And I'm just going to keep working into a really fun shape.
15:44 I could, if I wanted to, start to do separation and work that with a hairspray and a little
15:49 bit of a blow dryer to create this look coming off the crown, but that's also not the look
15:55 I'm going for.
15:56 I like to just play and try different shapes.
15:58 As long as you have the foundation in here, you can do anything you would like.
16:06 So I'm going to give you a spin around and just kind of show you again before I start
16:08 to manipulate and secure it here in the back if we wanted to.
16:18 But I want to have a little bit more fun since I have you guys.
16:21 So I feel like there's been a whole lot more grunge entering into our industry now.
16:28 Like there's a lot more rock and roll.
16:30 So that's kind of fun to play with.
16:31 If you can combine, once you know how to manipulate the hair, get it where it needs to be, really
16:36 combine those textures together and just have fun.
16:39 I think being a hairstylist, we really have that freedom behind the chair to just play.
16:44 And especially if you've built a relationship with your client where there's a lot of trust,
16:48 you absolutely can do that.
16:50 I know personally my clients are always, whenever I ask them what are we going to do, they're
16:55 like, "Whatever you want to do."
16:56 So it's really, it's great.
16:58 She's been with me for almost, well, since she was five years old, she's been with me.
17:02 So now she's a young lady.
17:04 So we've always just played with various looks and shapes even through the years with her
17:08 and her family.
17:12 So what I'm doing is I just did a very simple and loose rope braid.
17:18 And I'm just going to pull it apart.
17:19 You guys have seen this a million times now.
17:21 So I'm just going to pull this apart just to get this.
17:26 And I'm going to actually go underneath the ponytail and start to just secure this in.
17:32 I like to work with large bobby pins inside the salon.
17:36 So I'm going to keep this closed.
17:37 I'm not really a fan of opening them up.
17:40 So I'm just going to go in and push this through.
17:49 And I'm going to keep working through sections just to manipulate these same textures.
17:56 You could do braids.
17:57 You could do rope twists.
17:59 There's really, there's no limit to what you could do with these looks.
18:02 And again, because I've got this backcomb texture, you've already got the volume happening
18:06 inside the hair.
18:07 Just going to push it through a couple more times because we want to add more density.
18:14 I'm going to go in and give this hair a little bit of a tug on the side just to tighten the
18:28 look up.
18:29 I know a lot of times as hairstylists, and we have a salon here in the Atlanta area,
18:34 I'll watch hairstylists get completely like bombarded if they have a section of hair that
18:39 was maybe too loose.
18:40 And they'll take everything down, deconstruct it.
18:43 There's no need.
18:44 Just take one of the pins, keep it closed, and it's basically like doing a quick facelift.
18:47 So you just put it exactly where you would like it to lay.
18:52 Hopefully some of these tips are helping you guys out.
18:54 I know there's all different types of level of experience watching tonight, from beauty
18:58 school students to people that are veterans.
19:01 And I love to watch your work too.
19:02 There's so many of you guys that I personally follow on social media, and I love watching
19:06 you guys.
19:12 Someone asked me a while back in one of my classes who was my biggest inspiration.
19:15 I was like, "That's really hard."
19:16 I feel like I'm inspired by pretty much every hairdresser on the planet.
19:20 Like I get to watch you guys through social or meet you at the trade shows or come to
19:25 in-salon events and teach you guys.
19:27 And I feel like I'm always more inspired when I leave than when I got there.
19:31 So thank you guys.
19:32 I'm going to come through again and just do a very quick rope braid.
19:41 And start to pull this apart just to get that extra volume again.
19:52 You could also add elastics to the bottom of this if you feel like you need a little
19:55 bit more control.
19:57 I have enough of the TrueGrip powder in here that it's actually holding itself.
20:02 So I feel like I'm really able to get this cool texture of hair just to stay in place.
20:14 And kind of start to feel this out and see where you want to lay the hair.
20:26 When I was starting out in the industry, I would always grab mannequin heads.
20:29 Or if there was a stylist available throughout the day, I would grab them and ask them, "Can
20:33 I play with her hair?"
20:34 Or even this young lady here, I would ask them, "Can I just play with your hair?"
20:39 Because I had all these crazy ideas running through my head of textures and shapes.
20:43 And even the other week for Halloween, there was a magazine that reached out to me.
20:47 They were asking me about how to remove color, like spray artificial color for Halloween
20:52 or how to add beads.
20:53 And so I went to bed that night and I had all these crazy visions running through my
20:57 head of textures.
20:59 And so I had to execute it the next day.
21:01 So that's on my Instagram page where we added a lot of beads.
21:07 And I'm going to go through one more time just to get this texture.
21:12 So I would love to answer a couple of questions from you guys.
21:16 This is Infinium 3.
21:18 There's three different hairsprays that we have in this line.
21:20 It's amazing.
21:22 I like it.
21:23 It's a beautiful fragrance and it doesn't feel, when you're using it, it doesn't feel
21:25 like a really lightweight.
21:28 This is also great.
21:29 I like to use it inside the salon if I'm blow drying someone that maybe their hair, here
21:33 we're in Georgia.
21:34 So if they get a lot of humidity, I can go just give it a quick mist with the direction
21:38 of the hair and blow it dry.
21:41 What it's going to do is it's going to lock in and like seal the cuticle down.
21:44 It's really amazing.
21:46 So and then of course it's buildable.
21:48 So the more that I use, the stiffer hold I'll get.
21:53 What else do you guys have?
21:56 I'm going in right now and just giving this a little bit more of a texture look.
22:00 If you guys can see, I'm really starting to squeeze the hair between my fingers and building
22:04 up a little bit, I hate to say the word frizz, but just more texture because this is the
22:09 look that I'm feeling right now.
22:13 I don't want, I never want my clients to go somewhere feeling like they're, they're dated
22:17 with one of those really harsh up-dos or something like that.
22:21 I try to keep everybody current and just moving through the salon where the trend is.
22:26 So I'm going to do a very loose braid across the top.
22:31 I think this could be a lot of fun to play with just to start signing off this look.
22:36 Doing a loose braid and I'm going to give it a little bit of a spray, but then I'm also
22:41 going to go in and work this powder from the underneath.
22:44 You guys can see how this works.
22:47 It's just a light powder and I'm really doing that to add more density and texture.
22:51 It's going to give me a lot, a lot of playroom here so I can start to pull the shape apart
22:56 and build it because you can see we're not working with a lot of hair.
23:00 So I want to get as much pliability and volume out of this one piece of hair as I can.
23:08 And wherever I pull it, it really will stay.
23:12 The great thing about this powder also is the easiest way to remove it for me and my
23:16 guests is just to take a Mason Pearson brush and brush that out.
23:20 So it's great.
23:21 It's good for second day hair.
23:23 You can go in and build up that shape again.
23:25 Chantel wonders, "What's the best way to curl freshly washed hair?"
23:31 Hi Chantel, thank you for asking and for watching tonight.
23:35 So the best way to curl fresh washed hair would be really make sure as soon as the hair is
23:41 washed that you're using, like if you know if you're going to be styling someone's hair
23:45 like her, that their hair doesn't hold a lot of curl or maybe it falls flat very easily.
23:50 Use something that's volumizing.
23:51 Maybe go easy on the occasion that I may condition the hair first and then go back in and shampoo.
23:57 What that's going to do is it's going to allow me to build that texture starting at the shampoo
24:00 experience.
24:02 Then once I bring her to my chair, I would definitely go through with as many volumizing
24:07 products.
24:08 I take three products on each side.
24:12 Now you can see that this is making more sense.
24:14 I want to keep the eye moving down.
24:17 I think one of the biggest things that I see if I'm looking at a style in a magazine is
24:21 that I never want my eye to stop.
24:23 I want to keep my eye moving from the beginning of the shape to the end of the shape.
24:26 So really creating something that the consumer, when they're looking at it, they're like,
24:31 "Wow, it's beautiful from every angle."
24:35 I would love to take a couple of last minute questions, guys.
24:38 I think Vanessa may have come in a little late because she was wondering how we prep
24:43 the hair.
24:44 I love you for asking, Vanessa.
24:45 So I actually work with a new line from L'Oreal Professional called Hollywood Waves.
24:52 A lot of people just thought that it was only going to be for wavy hair.
24:56 There's the most amazing products inside this line.
24:59 So I prepped her hair with one of the creams.
25:01 It allowed me to get a lot of volume.
25:04 Then I work with Ouai Fatale, which is this.
25:07 This is what we were blowing on into the hair mostly.
25:10 You can also use this as a finishing cream, and I may do that in just a second on some
25:13 of the pieces, to show you it's a beautiful consistency.
25:17 The fragrance is amazing.
25:19 We're all about the fragrance.
25:20 So I'm going to go through and just emulsify it.
25:23 This product is great on wet, damp, or dry hair.
25:27 Just to pull through, I'm actually going to use it on the last section of rope braid,
25:31 just to add a little more texture inside.
25:34 So that's how we prepped it.
25:35 We did a barrel set after it was blown dry.
25:37 If you go back to the very beginning, you'll see that we did a really beautiful Hollywood
25:41 wave.
25:42 It was almost reminiscent of something in the '20s.
25:45 Now I'm just going through and just playing.
25:48 I'm having fun with this.
25:49 I think a lot of times, hairstylists get so nervous about up hair and formal styling,
25:55 and we have to remember it's just hair.
25:57 So if we make a mistake, with all the knowledge and education that we have out there and available,
26:02 we know that we can change it back instantaneously.
26:07 So I'm just going to give this a couple of pulls also.
26:14 And you guys can see that this is just a really, really fun look.
26:18 So great way to manipulate the hair.
26:22 I'm going to go through and pull out just a couple of pieces around the hairline, because
26:25 I love just a little bit of the shoveledness around the front.
26:31 Not too much.
26:34 And if I really wanted to, guys, we've already changed it from two looks.
26:39 If I wanted to put this completely up, it would be very simple to grab a large bobby
26:43 pin again, secure it.
26:46 I'm going to give you guys a quick spin of this look.
26:51 And then if I wanted to manipulate it into one more look, this time I will actually open
26:57 the bobby pin just a little bit.
26:59 I'm going to go into the hair about midway, and I'm going to take this and I'm going to
27:07 insert it on a horizontal.
27:08 So we're going to zoom in here.
27:14 Then I'm going to secure it with another pin just underneath that, almost in a criss-cross
27:17 formation.
27:23 And one last pin off on the left side of the head to bring this entire look in together.
27:33 And you can see that we completely created three different looks in just about 25 minutes.
27:39 So I loved working with you guys tonight.
27:43 I'm going to go back through and read any questions, comments you guys have.
27:46 I promise to respond.
27:47 Remember, guys, social media is social.
27:49 So I will get social with you guys tonight.
27:52 And I also will be posting before, during, and after looks of this on my Instagram page
27:58 @danielmasonjones.
27:59 So thank you so much for your time.
28:01 Happy Holidays to everyone, and make it happen in the holidays that's long, guys.
28:05 Take care.
