The debut LP from the Los Angeles band. In the early 60s, the adopted son of oil magnate Bob Markley arrived in Los Angeles with the intention of becoming a star. In his native Oklahoma, he was already familiar to viewers, but his Hollywood career progressed with difficulty and attempts to settle down in the cinema or on the stage had very modest success. Around the same time, the sons of classical composer Roy Harris, Sean and Danny, arrived in the City of Angels and joined the teenage surf group the Snowmen. In 1964 they met guitarist Michael Lloyd. He had already practiced in a number of ensembles, but the Harrises dragged him into the creation of a new team, The Laughing Wind. The group recorded some demos for a friend of the producer Kim Foley, and he suggested that the guys use Markley's lyrics in their songs. In 1965, Kim hosted a private party at Bob's mansion, where, along with the Yardbirds, The Laughing Wind also performed. If Markley was impressed by the way girls hang themselves on the musicians, then the Harrises were struck by the financial possibilities of the owner, which made it possible to get high-quality equipment both in terms of sound and lighting design. With Foley's approval, the young people entered the alliance and, supplemented by drummer John Ware, The West Coast Art Pop Experimental Band was born (according to Bob's plan, the ensemble with this name was supposed to be a Hollywood surf version of the Velvet Underground with a hint of Zappa). The band had recorded some material before Markley even entered the game (Danny Belsky was on drums, Lloyd sang, and Dennis Lambert played rhythm guitar), and it formed the basis of the first record. A rudimentary album with a modest name "Volume 1" was based on beat and folk covers ("Kinks", Bob Dylan, etc.). ) and was released on the tiny Hollywood label "FiFo" with a modest circulation of about a hundred copies. The record was re-released only in the mid-90s, but still, even in the 2000s, the price of the original vinyl reached $15,000.
