Why so many Foreplanes? - the aerodynamic design of Rafale, Gripen, Eurofighter Typhoon etc.

Delta wing plus canard is the most common configuration in modern combat jets. There is obviously a reason for that which is not immediate to understand. So, let's try to get to the bottom of it!
