00:00Hey, in this series we have already analyzed the aerodynamics, the structures, the configuration,
00:06the propulsion and the systems of the Sukhoi 57.
00:09Now it's time to dig deep into the sensors.
00:12The Russians divide them in two groups, the SH-121 electronic suite and the 101KS electro-optic
00:20system.
00:21In this episode we cover the electro-optics.
00:24Intro!
00:25The 101KS electro-optic suite is developed by Wombs, which actually acts as the system
00:39integrator.
00:41The codename during the development was Atoll, so this is another name that is commonly used
00:47to refer to it.
00:48Even in this case the critical information is secret, but as usual we probably know enough
00:52to make some educated guesses.
00:55So the Atoll has a double purpose.
00:58The first is to contribute to the situational awareness in the optic and infrared domain.
01:04The second is to defend the aircraft from missile attack with a large degree of automation
01:10and autonomy.
01:12And to do so it actually integrates several different subsystems.

01:20The 101KSV Infrared Search and Track, the 101KSU-01 and 02 Missile Approach Warning

01:56So the Su-57 Infrared Search and Track is just an air-to-air sensor, but it is integrated
02:02with all the other sensors in the Data Fusion, which is a peculiar characteristic of this aircraft.
02:09Always remember that an Infrared Search and Track is not a forward-looking infrared.
02:14The Infrared Search and Track is not a tool to produce images, albeit every modern airst
02:20is actually capable of doing so.
02:22The Infrared Search and Track is a tool that passively scans a portion of the sky to produce
02:28a track similar to the track produced by the radar that is actually shown to the pilot
02:33on the head-up display, the presentation screens or anywhere else.
02:39The KSV, like all modern Infrared Search and Tracks, can scan and track multiple targets
02:45remaining either completely passive or using a laser to find the distance.
02:50The airst ball, when not in use, can turn backward and the back of the ball is covered
02:56by radar-absorbing materials to improve stealth.
03:00The KSU-01 and KSU-02 are actually the same sensor included in a double or single casing.
03:12The double casing is shaped like a wedge and contain a sensor on each side of the wedge.
03:19They are located above the fuselage, toward the back, and just below the cockpit.
03:24Two single sensors are installed on the side, right aft of the cockpit.
03:28These sensors work in the ultraviolet band, where they can detect the huge ultraviolet
03:35emission of the rocket engines.
03:38Ultraviolet sensors are very accurate directionally and are very difficult to fool, but they have
03:44the intrinsic weakness of being effective only when the rocket engine is on.
03:49A missile that has exhausted its propulsion won't be identified.
03:53Furthermore, the ultraviolet band tends to be absorbed quite a lot by the atmospheric
03:58humidity and in bad conditions, in bad weather, the effectiveness of the sensors is actually
04:06diminished.
04:07To compensate for the intrinsic problems of the ultraviolet sensors, the Su-57 also has
04:18directional infrared sensors.
04:20The 11KSON is quite a sophisticated system.
04:25It is contained into a small dome attached to a relatively small black box.
04:32It's not actually black, but you get the point.
04:35The Su-57 has two of them, one above and one below the fuselage.
04:39The sensors scan the space around the aircraft and if they detect a missile, they flash a
04:46laser toward the sensor.
04:48The purpose is to confuse the missile guidance and deviate it off target.
04:53No use to say it actually works with infrared guidance, I don't expect it to be effective
04:59in any form with radar guidances.
05:02The infrared sensors can identify a missile even if the engine is off and they are more
05:07resistant to bad weather, but they tend to have problems at low altitude where the missile
05:13can be confused against the warmer background of the terrain.
05:20Some may say that for a country often covered with snow is not a big problem, but yeah,
05:26we don't know for sure.
05:27An interesting additional feature is the possibility for the pilot to actually see the pictures,
05:34the images captured by these sensors, albeit probably not in augmented reality mode.
05:40However, it is a nice addition to the situational awareness.
05:49The 101 KSP, on the contrary, provides a picture that can be used with the augmented reality.
05:55It is a small infrared camera installed on the left nacelle under the wing and its primary
06:00purpose is to work with the radar to improve the terrain following and low altitude navigation
06:07capability.
06:08The picture taken from this camera can be combined with the picture taken from the infrared
06:12search and track and the targeting pod to let the pilot see through the aircraft fuselage,
06:19pretty much like what happens with the DAS on the F-35.
06:24The test pilots say that when the system is activated, it gives them the surreal impression
06:30of sitting outside of the aircraft with nothing around them.
06:39The 101 KSP is a bespoke system developed specifically for the Suhoy 57.
06:46The designers explicitly said that it was inspired by the American Sniper X and it has
06:52roughly the same capabilities.
06:54Like many pods of this type, it has a rotating optical assembly with a visible light and
07:00medium infrared sensor.
07:02It can lock onto a target and track it while the aircraft moves.
07:06Like other targeting pods, it has an infrared laser that can be used for various purposes.
07:11It can be used as a laser designator, it can be used as a telemeter or it can be used as
07:17a marker for the troops on the ground or other assets.
07:26The UV-50-01 is a chaff and flail dispenser which is a bit different than the Western
07:33implementations.
07:34The plane has three units in the tail section, two facing upward and one facing downward.
07:39The system in flight is covered with a lid that it opens only when the system or the
07:43pilot actually order the release of chaffs and flails.
07:47Under the lid, each unit has 14 50mm barrels, each one housing a cartridge.
07:55There are 9 different types of cartridges and the system is supposed to release the
08:01best combination depending on the specific threat.
08:05The main peculiarity is that some of the cartridges are actually active decoys.
08:11They basically have the same role as the tau decoys that are found on some Western planes.
08:21So in the last two episodes we have discussed the Su-57 sensors, we have seen the radars,
08:27we have seen the electro-optics and we have learned that the Su-57 has one of the most
08:33complete sensor suite ever installed on an aircraft.
08:37It features a number of original solutions that are different from the kind of solution
08:44that is used in the West.
08:45If you want, the big unknown is exactly the level of integration and automation but in
08:51the next episode we will cover what everybody is waiting for, the armament, but in the meanwhile
