03:16Rather than from the satellite pictures that we have of the construction have been really dissected by the analysts
03:24So we can have some rough estimates about the ship. The most recent estimates
03:29placed the type 003 at
03:32318 meters length with the beam of
03:3678 meters on the flight deck. The displacement has been estimated to be a little shy of
03:43100,000 tons. Larger than the initial estimates. Overall, this means that the carrier is probably just
03:50slightly smaller than the Gerald Ford class. Some analysts actually believed that the ship was going to be some sort of an
03:58Intermediate model akin to what the Kitiok had been

04:06So the Chinese apparently skip a generation and the fact that there is a large basing being built in the south
04:12That is pretty much just big enough to host
04:17Type 003 is probably telling us that this is going to be a sort of a standard measure for Chinese aircraft
04:24For the years to come. The type 003 is still being built
04:27But we can identify some differences with the Ford class. For example, the type 003 doesn't feature a
04:34nuclear propulsion
04:36But its propulsion system is not entirely conventional either. In fact
04:41It seems that the ship is going to have an integrated electric propulsion. This means that turbines, boilers or any other power
04:49Generating element on board of the ship is not connected directly with the propellers
04:55But is only used to produce
04:58Electrical power which is transferred to electrical engines driving the propellers
05:03This type of propulsion is becoming increasingly popular because it has several advantages in terms of design
05:10But also efficiency compared with older configurations
05:14But this choice also makes sense because the type 003 will be equipped with three
05:20Electromagnetic catapults each one of those 105 meters long. On a carrier flight deck
05:27Basically, we just see a rail with a shuttle moving on it
05:32But actually a catapult is a relatively large system that may influence the whole ship design
05:39For example, steam catapults require the boiler to generate the steams and all the piping required to bring the steam from the boiler
05:48To the catapult that has a complex mechanical system that pushes the aircraft when is needed. On the contrary
05:55Electromagnetic catapults require a large amount of electric power being delivered
06:01Very quickly to accelerate the aircraft and this requires to bring the electrical power to accumulation devices
06:08And all the cabling that is actually required, all the control systems. In the United States the development of the emails has been long and bumpy
06:16But the advantages of the solution compared with the steam catapults is quite clear
06:23The Chinese don't have any direct experience
06:25But even in this case they have decided to skip a generation and point directly to the most modern
06:32Solution. Another element that heavily influences the design of the ship is the hangar
06:37It seems that the hangar of the type 003 is going to be slightly smaller than the Ford class hangar
06:44And it will have only two large
06:47Aircraft elevators rather than the three that are present on the Ford class
06:53The ship is expected to be launched in 2022 to be delivered in 2024 and to reach the initial operational

07:022025 or 2026
07:04However, the Chinese don't have any experience in running a cut-to-bar carrier

09:25capable of protecting those trade routes from the only opponent that in theory has the
09:32Possibility and the capability to shut them off the United States. However, look at the map. Well
09:40It looks like China has a problem right here the Malacca Strait. It is a choke point
09:47Surrounded by countries whose allegiance may not necessarily be to the Chinese
09:53those countries may host American or Western coalition forces that build a
