Frank Islam in conversation with Anil Rajvanshi, Director, Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute, Phaltan, Maharashtra. In a fascinating conversation, Rajvanshi, an IIT and University of Florida trained mechanical engineer, returned to India from a teaching job in the US in the eighties to change India, but ended up, as he says, 'India changed me'. As the head of a research-driven agricultural institute, Rajvanshi has done some pioneering work in improving lives of rural people in western Maharashtra through technology, especially in the use of solar lanterns, the use of sweet sorghum for food and fuel and the concept of e-rickshaws and rural restaurants for the poor.
