00:00Hi, Laura, what are you doing up?
00:30Barefoot.
00:32I just went to the kitchen for a glass of water.
00:34Barefoot. That's a great way to catch cold.
00:37What do you think I am, 90 years old or something?
00:40You're an annoying female.
00:43Singularly unfitted for childbearing.
00:49Darling, I was kidding.
00:51This time it'll be all right. Honest, Johnny.
00:53I know. I know.
00:55Can I have some coffee?
00:59I don't want you to think that the minute your back is turned,
01:02I'd do anything the doctor says I shouldn't.
01:04The doctor said get plenty of sleep.
01:06It's after 12.
01:08A darn plane woke me up.
01:10What plane?
01:12You must have heard it.
01:15Heard what?
01:18The motor started sputtering like it was having trouble.
01:22It was flying very low and very loud.
01:26Well, I guess it wasn't as loud as our old clunker's getting.
01:29Now I think the fan belt's gone.
01:31What next?
01:33You look exhausted.
01:35Holding down two jobs, working until midnight.
01:40You see what marriage has done for you, young man?
01:43See what it's done to you.
01:47I was so frightened when I woke up.
01:49From what?
01:51The plane.
01:54Then the sound went away.
01:58So I guess everything's all right.
02:03No. Everything is not all right.
02:07There's a theory, not yet proven,
02:10that when a woman is carrying a child,
02:12the five senses she uses in everyday living become infinitely more acute.
02:18But what about the sixth sense?
02:21That sense we barely acknowledge.
02:23And then with a skeptical smile.
02:26What happens with the sixth sense?
03:24Honey.
03:25Boy, wasn't that close.
03:27What?
03:29Oh, come on. I thought he was going to hit the house.
03:33The same time as last night, exactly.
03:36Isn't that strange?
03:41You must have heard it tonight.
03:43Yeah. Come on, little dreamer.
03:45Get back to sleep.
03:47You're going deaf. Do you know that?
03:49Mm-hmm.
03:52Was the radio playing or something?
03:54Yeah.
03:57He just zoomed right down at the same time.
04:06Some idiot up there with his split-second schedule of scaring the neighborhood.
04:15I heard it.
04:17Did I say no?
04:19But you didn't.
04:22You really didn't.
04:47It's going to hit!
04:49It's going to hit!
04:56Run, Danny, run!
04:58I'm telling you, run! It's going to hit!
05:00It's going to hit! It's going to hit!
05:02It's going to hit!
05:03It's going to hit!
05:18I heard it. I heard it.
05:20I heard it hit the roof.
05:23I saw the plaster break.
05:28What's happening to me?
05:35What's happening to me?
05:41What's happening to you is that you're going to have a baby.
05:46I mean, if you behave yourself, get plenty of sleep, and don't become a neurotic woman, you'll have a baby.
05:51This is no time for one of my bedside manners.
05:54If you start acting silly, even at this late date, you can still have trouble.
05:59You've got a pretty good history of trouble in that department.
06:02Come on, lay off her.
06:04But I heard the plane.
06:07Every time it was closer.
06:09What do you want me to say, that I didn't hear it?
06:12All right, so you heard it.
06:14But since there is no plane, you heard it here.
06:19But why?
06:21What difference does it make why?
06:24Why do most pregnant women develop their peculiar and ridiculous food wants?
06:29It's part of the pattern of sensitivity.
06:32Oh, why couldn't you have been nice and normal and merely need pickled pig's knuckles and strawberry sherbet or something?
06:39Would you lay off her, Doc?
06:40Her blood pressure was nowhere near as good as it was last week.
06:43Her pulse is going a mile a minute.
06:45Now, if you want yourself a nice, friendly old doc, you go someplace else.
06:57After six years of the trouble we've had, I want to be able to come out of that delivery room next month and say,
07:04Okay, Papa, buy the cigars.
07:08Now, first, let's deal with the plane.
07:11I want you to be absolutely convinced that it was your imagination and therefore meaningless.
07:19I am convinced.
07:21No, not really.
07:24But, Doctor, I saw the empty sky.
07:27All right, let's say the plane could have climbed behind a cloud.
07:31Who knows?
07:33Maybe, like you say, there is some maniac flying around up there, buzzing houses.
07:38But, if we can prove to you, without a doubt, beyond question, that there is no plane, then will you stop all this?
07:49Sure.
07:52Settle for being goofy.
07:54Oh, not goofy.
07:56Pregnant or dreaming?
08:00I was not dreaming!
08:04Yes.
08:05Yes, I'll stop it.
08:07You prove it to me.
08:12Laura, this is silly.
08:17It's the sixth time I've showed you that clock.
08:19Now, will you please go back to sleep?
08:21It's not going to happen.
08:23I feel like a dope, making you miss the night's work and everything.
08:28All that pay and all our bills.
08:31How do you stand me?
08:33Yeah, open.
08:34Two of them.
08:35Doctor said you'd be in dreamland five minutes later.
08:40I just felt certain that it was some kind of warning.
08:44Every night, exactly at 12.17.
08:47Each time closer.
08:50Open.
08:52How do you stand me?
08:54Should have taken them half an hour ago.
08:58Your boss is going to raise Cain.
09:02I really do give you a bad time.
09:07Wish there was somewhere I could say I'm sorry.
09:09Me too.
09:17How long has it been since we've danced, Stephen?
09:20You can't fuck mother nature.
09:23You can try.
09:24Ah, you're too fat.
09:26This is Joe Haley.
09:28Midnight comet with news and everything till dawn.
09:31The time of the chime is 12.15.
09:36You changed the clock.
09:38I didn't.
09:39Don't lie to me.
09:40You tricked me.
09:41You moved it up almost an hour.
09:43Asleep in five minutes.
09:44Oh, sure.
09:45Asleep when it happens.
09:46Asleep when it doesn't happen.
09:47I don't believe anything you say.
09:49Oh, look.
09:50Suppose someone is buzzing the neighborhood.
09:51Why should he scare you again?
09:52I'm going to find out.
09:53I don't believe you.
09:55It's starting!
09:57It's starting!
10:03The plane!
10:04The plane!
10:06What plane?
10:09Look.
10:24I. Nothing much.
10:40And what's she doing you fainted you know Doc Moroni always play it safe.
10:45I remember now. Johnny I remember now come on I saw the plane I saw the way to come
10:55crashing through the ceiling with green with white numbers on the wing and five to two
11:01seven K. How long I've been sleeping a long time hours what time is it Johnny you've got
11:11to do something. Don't you understand tonight is the night tonight it crashes through tonight
11:17it kills us. What she's going to do. For the baby's sake he said you've got to sleep at
11:24least twenty four hours straight through but if she gives me that I'll never wake up again
11:28tonight the plane kills us when you hold it. At twelve seventeen the plane crashes through and
11:37it's killing us. Every night it came closer and closer. You think I was able to see the
11:45numbers so clearly on the way. It's a warning Mr Perkins the doctor and.
11:56Please just just wait a minute. You know what the doctor said.
12:01If this keeps up. If you don't calm down you might just lose the baby. Now now what are
12:08you a gypsy or something some I don't know what with the Ouija board but you're a bright
12:15level head of girl you know things like this don't happen. But it did happen why.
12:22It's a warning. All right you saw the number on the plane.
12:30And five two two seven K. Those numbers are like license plates on a car if I check and find
12:36there's no plane like that with with a number on it. Would you be a good girl and take the
12:41highball and go back to sleep. If you'll be honest about it and don't lie like with the clock.
12:47I don't know what I'm going to say I'm going to call. Government you know. Nine
12:54at all close to the airport which airport must be half a dozen around the city.
13:02Say what.
13:08You know how ridiculous this is.
13:10But you don't have to do anything just just find out if they have a plane with that number on it.
13:40Never mind.
13:46There's a plane registered under that number. At the West Valley airfield. See.
13:55West that's only a couple of miles from me I know
13:58Johnny it's nearly nine thirty you're going to have to hurry all right.
14:29So.
14:31So.
14:54Anybody here.
15:02And I help you Mr Blake that's right they told me that was your plane as long as I can make
15:08the payments I hear you rented out to people Oh not another one here by the fifth one this week.
15:15I got to hang around it day after day everything is in tip top shape I'm ready to go nobody's
15:22interested. I'm going to stick it out of commission everybody in a brother wants to fly up then.
15:27Then. It is out of commission.
15:32Can't you tell those are operators.
15:39Look if you want this for something special or just for fun I mean if you can't wait it would
15:46be smart to see since I cracked up in fifty one I'm the original careful kid I'm the guy who wears
15:54a belt and a pair of suspenders. Most everybody else. Has an engine overhaul every hundred
16:04flying hours me every seventy five. I feel like hitting a mountain and losing a leg
16:10to make a guy get cautious when will it be flying again I thought maybe tonight but
16:16no such luck. I just left a note for the mechanic giving the bad news
16:20something very fishy about that crankshaft.
16:27How long will I take to fix up. A few days. If I told you something would you think I was crazy
16:37depends on what you told me and we live only a couple of miles from here and
16:41every night for the last four nights my wife is dreamed about this plane and every night it gets
16:49closer to crashing into the house and tonight she's absolutely certain it is going to crash
16:56or share she's even dreamed about the numbers on the wing. Well she's she's pregnant.
17:05You know how it is it well. Look Mr. That baby is a boy why
17:13you just bring him around here we'll give him a free airplane ride.
17:19I'll tell my wife there's nothing to worry about tonight they make women spooky though
17:37I've been through three of them already I never got used to them.
17:49I buy a cup of coffee. I buy a cup of coffee. No thanks.
18:19I just take a little snooze boss. Boy I wore myself out. What happened. Oh here look.
18:49Take a look at these and they ain't counterfeit either I checked. What are you talking about
18:55where's the plane. Well if this guy's doing what he said he was gonna do it's circling around over
19:00his street right about now flickering its lights on and off and wiggling its wings.
19:03What are you talking about. What's wrong. What did you do. Look boss about an hour ago an old fella
19:11come by here wanting to rent the plane and he offered me a hundred bucks. It was his 30th
19:16wedding anniversary and he wanted to fly over the house you know for a gag and a hundred bucks
19:20he offers me. Man I mean I worked my tail off finishing that overhaul so we wouldn't lose the
19:26dough and you you act like I was. What about the crankshaft. Huh. Huh. I left a note for you on
19:31the work table. I told you not to. Boss look I didn't see any note. Well if you get over to that
19:40communications shack and you have them contact this guy on the unicom and tell him to land right
19:47now. Okay. Wait wait wait. This field at night with all those hills and wires is bad enough even
19:54when everything is okay. Must be a must be a better field where things aren't so rough. Yeah
19:59where there's Lake City and Marblehead Porterfield. Lake City is it's not too bad. Not too bad it's a
20:06beauty no hills nothing. All right have him land at Lake City but move. Okay. Wait.
20:14There's a young fella here before. Also. You weren't here he had some some story.
20:25Said his wife saw the plane. Look look. Boss look. Look if any any trouble develops on that plane
20:34you have this anniversary joker use the chute. Bail out. Boss will you tell me. An order direct
20:39from me personally the owner. Okay. And radio the field at Lake City and tell him what's what and
20:46to expect him. Okay. Why didn't you get a room with a double bed. I told you four times already
20:55they don't have one. Happy. Relaxed. First time in three nights. Ten bucks for this crummy motel.
21:12Boy oh boy. Pay it back out of the budget okay. Chasing out of the house like crazy people.
21:19After I told you the plane couldn't possibly fly.
21:27Good old twin beds. I'm sorry I'm such a dope. But if we'd have stayed in our house tonight
21:36I don't care what you said about the plane. When the clock says twelve seventeen. We'd have all
21:41have died. I'd have died. The motor was hanging all over the floor. Come on kiss me good night I'm
21:53half asleep already. I ought to do is break your neck.
22:42I suppose the moral would be that you can't change fate. But if you know what's coming you can duck.
22:49Also you might say that if John and Laura had stayed in this house they'd have been safe. But
22:55their fate was to be in that motel room. Driven there step by step exactly as we have dramatized.
23:02Also happily their fate was to get out of that room in time. Then why Laura's vision of things
23:10to come. Who knows. Perhaps to save the life of someone that John and Laura and you our audience
23:18never knew. The pilot of the plane. Because he did bail out in time. As ordered.
23:26In any event who in the world are we to even try to understand fate. Let alone expect it to create
23:33logical little patterns. All we can say is that what you have seen. Did happen. Jane Anna Pritchard
23:41of five five one two Riverton Avenue North Hollywood California. Did indeed see and hear
23:48a falling plane day after day. Before it actually fell. And tried to prevent its fall. Tried.
23:56And failed. To be skeptical of the sixth sense is perhaps wise. But to ignore it.
24:06Could be very dangerous.
