MANILA, Philippines – A man running for the post of barangay captain in Gamu, Isabela was gunned down Saturday, in just the first day of campaigning for the barangay elections. Kagawad Rolly Lauria, 43, was running for captain in Barangay Furao, Gamu, Isabela when he was killed Saturday night while attending a party before the wedding of a child of one of a fellow kagawad. Initial investigations showed that Lauria was urinating when he was shot in the right side of his head and stomach, leading to his death. Lauria’s relatives believe that his killing was politically motivated. One relative said Lauria has received death threats before and has been offered P100,000 to pull out of the race for barangay captain. Police are still investigating the incident, while many of the residents in Barangay Furao have refused to speak so as not to get caught up in the issue. -- Report from Janford Bonifacio, ABS-CBN News Cagayan Valley.
