Taiwan says ‘no’ to same-sex marriage, Olympic name change

Taiwanese voters have rejected proposals to legalise same-sex marriage and change the name used by the island’s Olympic teams. In referendums held alongside local elections on November 24 nearly seven million people voted against amending the civil code to legalise same-sex marriages. Supporters of LGBT rights were disappointed, but said it was not the end of the line for their campaign. Taiwanese also voted against referendum that would have changed the name used by sports teams from “Chinese Taipei” to “Taiwan” at future international events.
