Aaron, Wooi Yik, Zii Jia drive away with Chery and RM100,000

Badminton Men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, not only drove away with a Chery Tiggo 7 Pro sports utility vehicle (SUV) each on Thursday (Aug 22), but also received an additional RM50,000 each under the National Sports Council’s (NSC’s) incentive scheme (Shakam) for their bronze medal victory at the Paris Olympics in early August.

Men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia, who also won bronze, was also awarded the SUV, and will receive the RM100,000 grant from the government as well.

01:29However, it was later decided that each player would receive RM100,000.
01:35Zijia, who is away at the Japan Open in Yokohama, will also receive the RM100,000 grant from
01:41the government.
01:42Hannah noted that Aaron and Wuyik were instrumental in breaking the medal drought for the Malaysian
01:47contingent at the Paris Olympics, securing the country's first medal in the men's
01:52doubles event.
02:23Despite not being part of the Road to Gold programme, Zijia received a RM50,000 grant
02:44before the Olympics for his 2024 Paris preparation and has also been allocated another $100,000
02:52for his post-Olympics preparations.
02:55This is in addition to the RM100,000 Shakam incentive for his bronze medal achievement.
03:01Wuyik, pleasantly surprised by the gift of the SUV, said he would give the car to his
03:06father, Soe Goon Chap, a former Thomas cupper.
03:20The stylish Cherry SUV is valued at RM123,800.
03:25Aaron mentioned that this was the first time either of them had received a car in recognition
03:30of their success.
