KENTUCKY- At least one person was killed and several others were injured when a shooter opened fire at Marshall County High School in Benton, Ky., according to reports.

The school was reportedly on lockdown as law enforcement officials continued work at the scene. The Marshall County Tribune-Courier reported two helicopters landed at the school to treat and transport the injured.

“Parents are being asked not to try and pick up students from Marshall County High School,” the newspaper stated. “We have been told there have been arguments between law enforcement and parents trying to get inside. The school remains on lockdown and no one is being allowed inside either entrance. Two Air Evac helicopters have landed in the past few minutes.”

“Students at Marshall County High School are being bused to North Marshall Middle School. Parents may pick up students there. The shooter is in custody and Kentucky State Police have confirmed one dead. Parents are being asked not to contact the school for information. The phone lines need to remain open so that school officials can access lines.”

It was not immediately clear how old the victims were and the injuries they sustained.

A Benton Elementary Schools spokesperson told FOX17 Nashville that all students and staff were safe.

Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin tweeted:

“Tragic shooting at Marshall County HS…Shooter is in custody, one confirmed fatality, multiple others wounded…Much yet unknown…Please do not speculate or spread hearsay…Let’s let the first responders do their job and be grateful that they are there to do it for us…”
