TIME interviewed President Trump on Wednesday, delving into matters involving “truth and falsehoods.”
Topics broached included the president’s claim that he was wiretapped by Barack Obama and FBI Director James Comey’s announcement that there is no evidence of such a thing ever happening.
Among Trump’s final words in the exchange were, “I guess, I can’t be doing so badly, because I’m president, and you’re not.”
As for his defense of the specific happenings mentioned by interviewer Michael Scherer, Trump's stance was largely that’s he’s been right all along, but the media either hasn’t caught up with, or is declining to publish, such findings.
When asked about Comey’s denial that the wiretapping occurred, Trump brought up House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes’ announcement that Trump’s team communications may have been gathered as part of a legal surveillance endeavor.
Notably, Nunes was clear that the information in no way supported the president’s wiretapping allegations, notes Politico.
Nonetheless, Trump continued to defend his allegations.
He further commented, “…a lot of information has just been learned, and a lot of information may be learned over the next coming period of time.”
In a series of tweets on March 4, Trump said, "Terrible! Just found out that Obama had my 'wires tapped' in Trump Tower just before the victory. Nothing found. This is McCarthyism!" and "How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!"
