AAA: Over 200,000 U.S. Car Crashes Caused By Road Debris

A new report by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has found that road debris like unsecured cargo and disconnected car parts have contributed to more than 200,000 car crashes, resulting in about 39,000 injuries and 500 deaths between 2011 and 2014.

There’s a somewhat surprising reason behind thousands of car accidents in America.
According to a recent AAA news release, its Foundation for Traffic Safety has determined that, “more than 200,000 crashes involved debris on U.S. roadways during the past four years.”
These objects most commonly included unsecured cargo, separated tow trailers, and car parts like tires.
The group found that these incidents resulted in “...approximately 39,000 injuries and more than 500 deaths between 2011 and 2014.”
In terms of the fatalities, nearly 37 percent occurred when the driver swerved to avoid the debris and, in some cases, lost control of the car after overcorrecting.
Meanwhile, more than 33 percent of these crashes happened “...between 10:00 a.m. and 3:59 p.m., a time when many people are on the road hauling or moving heavy items like furniture or construction equipment.”
Interstate highways were the most common sites, as higher speeds tend to cause debris to end up on the road more often.
To prevent such problems, AAA recommends that drivers regularly maintain their vehicles and properly secure all cargo.
