In the past, studies have shown children exposed to environmental bacteria are at lower risks for developing asthma. Leading researchers at the University of Arizona plan to test whether treating young children with a bacterial extract can prevent the chronic condition. Researchers will conduct a clinical trial with 1,000 babies at the university to observe whether the extract reduces asthma symptoms during the first few years of their lives. Based on the findings, it is theorized that treating babies with a bacterial extract could build an immunity earlier strengthen the bodies of those at highest risk for the condition.
