According to an article recently posted on Esquire, filmmaker Damon Gameau had been maintaining a relatively low-sugar diet when he made a conscious decision to consume the average sugar intake by an Australian each day--40 teaspoons--for about 2 months.
But instead of fulfilling the requirement with junk food like ice cream and candy bars, he instead chose seemingly healthy items such as low-fat yogurt and granola bars, notes The Guardian.
Physically, the experiment caused Gameau to add 19 pounds and increase his body fat by 7 percent; his waist grew by almost 4 inches.
He also had mental challenges which he says kicked in about 45 minutes after the sugar intake and resulted in a “feeling of being vague and aloof.”
Throughout the process, Gameau has admitted that the scariest part was when his liver started becoming fatty, and that towards the end he almost developed cirrhosis, an irreversible liver condition.
As for his health now, he has recovered fully and has gone back to mostly consuming the natural sugars in fresh produce.
