http://www.TransformingStigma.com America's leading mental health speaker, Mike Veny is delivering a presentation titled, Transforming Stigma into Strength. He customized speech to address the stigma experienced by birth mothers of children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

The presentation was sponsored by Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (MOFAS). Prior to agreeing to present, Mike struggled with negative beliefs about birth moms of babies with FASD. "How could a mother do that to their child?", he thought. His beliefs changed after meeting and speaking with the people at the Minnesota Organization on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

In the process of preparing for this event, he learned about the many myths surrounding FASD.

The most common myth that is as that only women with alcohol and substance abuse addiction have children with FASD. What he learned was that more than 50 percent of pregnancies are not planned. That being said, an expecting mother can be 2-3 months into her pregnancy and not even be aware that she is pregnant. If an expecting mother is unaware that she's pregnant and drinks alcohol (even once in a while), she can cause serious damage to her fetus.

Sadly, children with FASD don't outgrow it. The damage caused in the womb will stay with them for the duration of their life. It's essential that children with FASD get the best help and treatment possible as soon as it's discovered.

Regardless of what caused FASD in a child, the birth mothers live with guilt and stigma. Whether they drank while knowing that they were pregnant or not, they have to live with the fact that the choice to drink alcohol caused serious damage to their child. In this video, Mike Veny offers birth moms hope and encouragement to forgive themselves. In addition, he offers them tools that they can use in society to educate mothers and transform the stigma.
