Kazakhstan Town's Mysterious ‘Sleeping Sickness’

Officials in Kazakhstan believe they have traced the cause of a mysterious ‘sleeping sickness’ plaguing two villages to carbon monoxide and other gases from nearby mines reducing oxygen levels in the air.

Sleeping for long, uninterrupted periods may seem like a luxury for most, but for some Kazakhstan residents, it’s become a major problem.

“Sleeping sickness” is what people have been calling the mysterious illness that has been plaguing two villages for years, and now, scientists believe they have figured out the cause. 

According to officials, high amounts of carbon monoxide and other hydrocarbon gases in the air are reducing overall oxygen levels.
