Paraguay Marks 3rd Year Anniversary of Parliamentary Coup

Today marks the third anniversary of the parliamentary coup in Paraguay that removed democratically elected president Fernando Lugo from office through a series of legal maneuvers. Since then Lugo has been the target of 20 lawsuits from right-wing legislators. Known as the Red Bishop, Lugo, a progressive politician and adherent of liberation theology, was elected in 2008, ending 61 years of rule by the Colorado Party, which included the Alfredo Stroessner dictatorship. In office, his progressive policies were stymied by the Colorado Party's parliamentary majority. teleSUR
