Imperial Boating Party in Arashiyama_ Mifune Matsuri

The annual Mifune Matsuri (三船祭) was held in Arashiyama, Kyoto. This festival has commenced for the past 1.000 years along the Ōi River (大堰川). I cycled with my son from Joyo to Arashiyama following the Kizugawa, Ujigawa and Katsuragawa rivers.
After a brief ceremony at the nearby Kurumazaki Shrine (車折神社) the participants, all dressed in the old Heian style garb, crossed the Togetsukyō bridge (Moon Crossing Bridge-渡月橋) towards the shore of the Ōi River (大堰川). There where loads of people watching this event and it is said that more than 100.000 people come to view this festival.
A shinto ceremony is held before the participants set out on the cool waters of the Ōi River in three boats, from there the Mifune or “Three Boats” matsuri. Dances, poetry and music is performed on the river.
Today was a fine spring day, and Arashiyama, shone in all its beauty, what an experience in such an awesome spot of Kyoto.
