A college student in Florida is being hailed as a hero after diving into the water to rescue an elderly man from a sinking car.

The 92-year-old’s vehicle had driven into a pond in Port St. Lucie on Wednesday. At the time of the accident, 21-year-old Alton Brieske had been having lunch and watched as the car plowed through bushes and into the water.

Brieske didn’t hesitate to respond. He ran across the street, took off his shirt, jumped into the pond and started swimming towards the auto. The elderly man, identified as Salvatore Mancuso, was unconscious inside the car.

Brieske banged on the window but couldn’t get him to awaken. He noticed a crack in the passenger side window and realized the vehicle was likely going to sink, so he yelled to witnesses and announced he needed a hammer.

Fortunately, someone had one and gave it to him. He struck the glass several times before it finally shattered.

Brieske remarked “I .. popped the lock, opened the door. That's when the water started rushing in, so I just acted fast, popped his seat belt off, put my arm under his shoulder and got him out of the car.”

Once that was done, Brieske, who aspires to be an ER doctor, performed CPR. Mancuso was later transported to the hospital where his condition was listed as critical but stable.
