Xerfi Global has recently published a report on "European Clothing Retail Chains". Europe represents a huge apparel market in terms of value, reaching €337.9 billion in 2014, but has been stunted somewhat by the stagnant economic environment hanging over the Old Continent. Annual average growth in European clothing and footwear sales has thus stood at a mere 0.3% from 2008 to 2013. However, this average does not reflect the considerable polarisation between major clothing chains and smaller players, which has been accentuated by the crisis. Indeed, in the last few years, leading clothing chains in Europe, particularly those with a large international presence, have shown higher resilience than minor players. The aggregate net sales of the 14 major players analysed in this report grew at an average annual rate of 6.9% from 2008 to 2013, far outpacing smaller competitors and increasing concentration of the sector.
