Xerfi Global has recently published a study on world cosmetic and perfume makers. This is a market that has proven to be considerably robust, defying the general downturn seen in most industries during the financial crisis. Although industry growth slowed in 2009 to a low point of 1%, growth has never gone into negative territory during the crisis and its aftermath, giving a compound annual growth rate of +3.6% from 2008 to 2013.
Emerging markets are responsible for driving a large part of this growth and are coming to outgrow mature markets. Currently, emerging markets generate around 47% of demand but are expected to overtake developed markets within the next few years to generate 55% of global spend in 2017.
A number of factors have allowed perfumes and cosmetics to ride out the harsh years with resistance and will remain growth drivers in the years to come.[...]
