Strawberry Shortcake Filled With Chicken? Merry Christmas!!! - Food Feeder

As we near the end of the year, we can't resist one more chance to make fun on the crazy things the folks in Japan are doing with food. Fortunately: Chicken Cake!!

Eating strawberry shortcake is a Christmas tradition in Japan, which is y’know, normal enough. However, a yakitori restaurant in Tokyo caked Zenyaren decided that they needed to create an offering for the sweets-hating portion of the population, and in a clear ploy to lure Noah into applying for Japanese citizenship, have created a chicken-based variation on the Christmas Cake.

The cake is make of tsukune, a ground chicken mixture that’s usually served grilled and well-sauced in yakitori joints, but in this cask, they’ve “frosted” the cake with mashed potatoes instead of whipped cream, so we could actually get behind this as a bit of a savory tromp d’oeil, except they leave on the strawberries and marzipan Santa that are traditional to most Japanese Christmas Cakes. Even with the suggested dusting of Cayenne pepper, this still sounds like a setup for a bad case of taste whiplash.

Japan-dwelling Feeders, we’re counting on you to try this sucker out and let us know how it tastes. Via tweet! @TastedChannel

Would you try Zenyaren’s Chicken Christmas Cake? Do you think you’d enjoy it more than normal cake? Do you enjoy this sort of eye-tricking cuisine? If you’ve tried this Christmas Cake (or any Christmas Cake, in Japan, really) - let us know about the experience!
