In the early morning hours of Monday, a huge fire broke out in downtown Los Angeles, resulting in damages to three structures.

According to a spokesperson from the Los Angeles Fire Department, the blaze started at an apartment tower that was under construction.

The building had 1.3 million square feet of space indoors and fire officials said more than 60 percent of the structure was engulfed in flames.

Approximately 250 firefighters responded and used a nearby freeway to line up the trucks and equipment used to tackle the blaze. It took about an hour and a half for them to douse the majority of the flames, however firefighters remained on scene to fight hot spots.

The freeway was shut down while the efforts to put out the blaze were underway. The fire affected two other buildings in the vicinity.

One of the structures encountered external damage from the heat while several floors of another building, a 16-story office tower, were also damaged.

A Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman, David Ortiz told NBC news “This is a historic fire, what we as firefighters would call 'a career fire. It's huge. I really can't remember a building fire this big and I have been with the department for 13 years.”
