Mercedes-Benz Reveals What Interiors For Autonomous Cars Would Look Like

The automaker showed it's prospective interior design for a driverless car that includes rotating seats and a gesture-controlled system.

In the past, people always assumed the future would be full of flying cars and other sci-fi gadgets. While cars can't fly, they may soon drive themselves.

Car maker Mercedes-Benz has revealed it's vision for the interior of an autonomous car.

One of the main themes of the design is to provide passengers with, as they put it, a "private area of retreat."

This would allow passengers a place to relax or work, and, most importantly, not worry about driving.

Amenities include gesture-based controls that can be manipulated with hand, eye or finger movement.

Also featured are display screens showing what's happening outside, and seats that can rotate to face each other.

Currently, Mercedes has been developing autonomous features, such as navigation and merging, to be employed in test models.

They hope success with those capabilities will pave the way to a fully autonomous vehicle.

While only a design concept right now, the company hopes to produce a showroom-ready model of the car's system by 2020.
