A couple in the UK was fined by a hotel after leaving an unfavorable review of the accommodations on TripAdvisor.

In their online assessment of the Broadway Hotel in Blackpool, England, Tony and Jan Jenkinson referred to the place as a, “rotten stinking hovel.”

Not long after, they noticed that the establishment had added a charge of approximately 150 dollars to their credit card.

It turns out the hotel’s policy is to fine those who leave bad reviews.

There’s mention of it in the fine print of the lodging agreement, but Mrs. Jenkinson didn’t notice the clause when she signed the form.

As part of an effort to fight the fine, Mr. Jenkinson reached out to John Greenbank, a manager with the UK’s consumer protection agency.

He commented, "The hotel management clearly thinks they have come up with a novel way to prevent bad reviews, however we believe this could be deemed an unfair trading practice."

Glancing at the hotel’s TripAdvisor page, it doesn’t appear that the policy has been very successful at keeping unsatisfied guests quiet.
