Mercedes-Benz Creates Concept Car With Solar-Absorbing Paint
The new hybrid concept car, Vision G-Code, utilizes energy absorbed through its paint to power itself.
Automaker Mercedes-Benz is known for its innovative and sleek designs. One of their newly released concept models combines those accents with groundbreaking technology for a truly unique vehicle.
The Vision G-Code as the Sports Utility Coupé is being called, generates power from a couple of unusual sources.
The first is the futurist paint finish referred to as "multi-voltaic silver," which works in two different ways. It absorbs sunlight and turns it into electricity, and when the car is in motion, creates an electrostatic charge from the wind.
The car is also a hybrid, but it's atypical compared to other models. The back wheels are powered by an electric motor, while the front wheels are propelled by a turbocharged hydrogen combustion engine.
Along with its paint, the car can generate power whenever it brakes and has plug-in technology, both traits normally found in hybrid vehicles.
One interesting design aspect is the car's windshield. It wraps around the front to both sides in one continuous piece of glass, similar to a powerboat.
The interior of the G-Code features a smartphone app that starts the car and a rear-view camera feed superimposed on the heads-up display.
While there are no plans for mass production of this car, some of its design elements will hopefully be used in future models.
