Massive Drill Bit Pierces NYC Tunnel Narrowly Missing Train

Subway riders are often onboard trains while the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, or MTA in New York City works to fix issues and add new things. Recently, a massive drill bit sunk through a crowded subway tunnel in Long Island City.
On Thursday, a massive drill bit punched through a crowded subway tunnel in Long Island City. According to the MTA, it drilled through the ceiling of the tunnel and came into contact with the exterior of subway car that was reportedly filled with passengers.
The drill bit, which is said to be about 10 inches in diameter, is a component of machinery being used for construction efforts. At the time of the incident, it was being operated by a contactor stationed above the ground.
The drilling is part of a project called East Side Access to give Long Island Rail Road trains access to Grand Central Terminal.
Roughly 800 people were onboard the ‘F’ train at the time. As soon as the conductor witnessed the drill bit coming downwards, the emergency brake was applied. =
The drill bit did not actually pierce through the subway car. No injuries were reported. An investigation has been launched into the incident and construction work is suspended in the area.
