Staffers from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or RSPCA are nursing a dog back to health after he was struck by a crossbow.

The story of the pooch named Ziggy is a sad one. The two-year-old canine was discovered in a remote wooded area in Peterborough, UK on Wednesday.

A bolt from a crossbow was protruding from him. The weapon, which measures about 20 inches long, was left firmly lodged in his head.

One side of it was sticking out by his ear while the other end extended through the top of his skull. RSPCA inspector Justin Stubbs further elaborated “Despite this bolt going straight through Ziggy's head it miraculously missed his brain, ear capsule and eyes. Whoever did this took a very intentional shot at very close range. It really broke my heart this one.”

Staffers believe he wandered alone in the woods with the bolt stuck in his head for at least two days before he was spotted. Good Samaritans transported the dog to a vet, who in turn contacted RSPCA employees.

Prior to receiving surgery to remove the bolt, Ziggy’s tail was wagging upon meeting those who offered to help him. Ziggy is now recovering from the ordeal and RSPCA officials are trying to find the individuals responsible for harming him.
