A U.S. air marshal was recently assaulted with a syringe. The incident occurred on Sunday inside the Lagos, Nigeria, airport.

The victim reported being assaulted by a suspect while in the public section of the facility. The federal air marshal knew he had been struck with a syringe but wasn’t sure what he had been injected with.

The State Department conducted a preliminary exam and administered precautionary medication. After that, the official flew back to the U.S. and reportedly ‘felt fine’ for the long 12-hour flight.

The syringe used in the assault was also flown to the U.S. for further testing. Once the plane landed, he was checked over by the CDC and the FBI and then transported to the hospital for a through examination.

An FBI spokesman commented “None of the testing conducted has indicated a danger to other passengers."

Authorities are looking into whether or not the air marshall was assaulted because he’s American. He did not speak to the attacker at all.

Both the CDC and the FBI have launched investigations into the incident.
