A teenage girl in Maine and her father recently caught a rare blue lobster. On Saturday, 14-year-old Meghan LaPlante and her dad Jay spotted the 2-pound, bright blue creature in one of their traps.

Reflecting on the discovery, Meghan stated “It definitely stood out. We were really surprised."
There’s a good reason why she was so shocked to see the crustacean.
Experts suspect the odds of a blue one are about one in two million. Researchers at the Lobster Institute at the University of Maine say the striking blue hue comes from a genetic defect that increases the production of a particular protein.
Other lobsters are either brown or dark green before landing in a pot of boiling water. Fortunately for this special blue one, it won’t end up dissected on someone’s supper plate.
The LaPlantes are donating the crustacean, now named Skyler to the Maine State Aquarium in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, where there are three other blue lobsters.
