If you’re a roller coaster fan, venture to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, Illinois where the new ride called ‘Goliath’ just recently opened. ‘Goliath’ is certainly a big boy, having been deemed the tallest wooden ride in the world. In addition, it’s also the steepest and fastest.
As for what riders experience, they’re basically shot 180 feet down towards the ground. During the journey, they are taken through numerous twists and turns at an 85 degree angle. The top speed is 72 miles per hour, making the ride last 1 minute and 15 seconds.
Given all the loops and inversions at rapid speeds, even diehard coaster riders can easily get a little queasy. The company that planned and built the ride, Rocky Mountain Construction, used a specialized track system to eliminate that rickety feeling associated with wooden roller coasters,
It’s called ‘The Topper Track’ system and incorporates pieces of steel over the top layers of laminated wood, which allows for a super-smooth, crazy fast ride.
Thus far, riders lucky enough to have tried it out are raving about the experience. Park president, Hank Salemi commented “Goliath is innovation at its best and will forever change the skyline of Six Flags Great America.”
