Estimated 3 Billion People Will Be Using the Internet by the End of 2014
According to a report from the United Nations International Telecommunications Union, around 3 billion people will be using the internet by the end of the year 2014. That’s almost 40 percent of the entire population of the planet, with two thirds of the users getting online in developing countries.

Data from the report says that by the end of the year three out of four people in Europe will be online, along with two out of three people in North and South America, one in three people in Asia and the Pacific, and almost one out of five people in Africa.
Brahima Sanou, the Director of the ITU’s Telecommunication Development Bureau, is quoted as saying: “If we want to understand the information society, we have to measure it. Without measurement we cannot track progress or identify gaps which require our attention.”
Although the number of internet users is growing, more than 90 percent of the people who aren’t online live in developing countries.
Another estimate from Cisco Systems, Inc. says that there are 10 billion devices connected to the internet, and that number is projected to reach 50 billion by the year 2020.
