An internal investigation is now underway after an off-duty NYPD officer allegedly shot at a car that was passing him.
An internal investigation is now underway after an off-duty NYPD officer allegedly shot at a car that was passing him.
According to local police, the 27-year-old cop, Brendan Cronin, used his work-issued Glock 9 millimeter handgun to fire repeated shots at the car in Pelham just before midnight. The passenger in the other vehicle was hit by 6 of those bullets.
NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said he thinks alcohol may have been involved in the occurrence. A witness, who saw the troubling ordeal unfold, claimed it appeared as though the shooting was a result of road rage.
Onlooker Travis Hood detailed what he saw. He had been outside his apartment when he witnessed a driver get cut off by another vehicle.
That driver, who was later identified as Cronin, began screaming and climbed out his side window before firing round after round according to Hood. The police were immediately called to the scene.
They soon found Cronin driving in the vicinity with his hazard lights on. Cronin reportedly continued maneuvering down the road and at one point stuck his gun out the window.
Eventually cops made an arrest after ordering him to drop his keys and firearm out the window. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test.
Cronin has been charged with assault. The 47-year-old victim is said to be in stable condition.
