Olympic training relies heavily upon following strict diets that optimize health and performance.

So, what do Olympians do when they’re travelling to a country where the regular food offerings are for the most part off-menu?

Well, you bring your own ingredients and a team of chefs, of course.

The United States Olympic Committee has sent a culinary staff, three full-time dieticians, and loads of food to Sochi so the 230 athletes’ regular training dishes can be recreated on site.

As their individual events near, recipes will be tweaked to ensure that the team is properly fueled.

Specific balances of proteins, carbs, and veggies are tailored to the energy requirements of each sport.

One of the team’s dieticians stressed that the time right before the games is not one for experimentation.
The US’ isn’t the only team that gets that kind of special attention.

The competitor’s cafeteria is divided by global cuisine, with separate sections for North American, Asian, Russian, and Middle Eastern fare, among others.

With all that fabulous food around, no doubt the US Olympians are grateful that once their event day passes, they can eat and drink whatever they’d like.
