The results of a recent study show that overweight or obese people who drink diet soda make up for it by eating more calories.

Researchers from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University looked at data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on the eating habits and health information of adults that were age 20 and older between 1999 and 2010.

They found that overweight adults who drank beverages with artificially sweeteners consumed 88 more calories from food than people the same weight who had drinks with sugar, and obese people who consumed diet drinks ate 194 more calories per day.

One of the theories behind why people who drink diet soda are gaining weight is that artificial sweeteners don’t create the same reaction in the body as sugar.

Sara Bleich, the lead author of the study from Johns Hopkins University said: “What we've seen from animal data is there is something metabolic that changes when you consume artificial sweeteners. The brain is tricked into thinking it is less full.”

About one out of five overweight or obese people in the US drink diet beverages like soda, tea, and juice regularly, which is two times more than people who are a healthy weight.
