Land Art Installation of Child’s Face Is Visible from Space

A satellite image of a land art installation in Belfast, Ireland entitled Wish and featuring the face of a child, is competing to become DigitalGlobe’s top image of the year.
The shot was taken by the company’s WorldView 2 space-orbiting camera in early November, shortly after the piece was officially debuted.
Covering 11 acres, Wish is the creation of Cuban-American artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada and, with the help of volunteers, took a month to complete.
Its assembly involved the hand placement of 30 thousand wooden stakes and 8 million pounds of sand, soil, and rock.
Said the artist of the piece, “Working at very large scales becomes a personal challenge but it also allows me to bring attention to important social issues, the size of the piece is intrinsic to the value of its message.”
In this case that message is the wish of a child that their future be better.
The installation has some tough competition to earn the distinction of being DigitalGlobe’s most popular image. Votes can be cast on the company’s Facebook page through the end of the year.
