It would be heartbreaking for any pet owner to know that their dog was hit by a train.

A pooch in the United Kingdom is insanely fortunate to have survived a collision. The horrible incident occurred in April of this year.

The dog named Collie Rex had been with a pet sitter while his human owners, Caroline and Phillip were on a week-long vacation. The morning after they returned, Phillip took the dog for his first walk since picking him up, and Collie Rex was so excited he couldn’t be controlled.

While on the leash, he pulled and tugged until he was able to get free. He ran onto some nearby railroad tracks and stopped seeming mesmerized by an oncoming train but unfortunately the locomotive which had been traveling roughly 50 miles per hour was unable to stop in time. Collie Rex was struck by the train.

Initially it was believed Collie Rex had slim chances of pulling through as his skull had been smashed, however after numerous surgeries and several months of recovery, the dog has now fully recovered.

Considering the painful and unbelievable ordeal, Collie Rex has been named a finalist for the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals Pet Survivor Awards for 2013.
