The British company E2V has developed a device that can remotely disable the engine of any vehicle that’s within about 50 yards of it.

It’s called the RF SafeStop and its prototype was recently demonstrated for the public.

The system, which is intended for law enforcement use, sends radio frequency pulses to the target vehicle’s electrical system and shuts down the engine.

The car then just safely glides to a halt.

Some have expressed concerns that it takes too long. Others worry that it could potentially inhibit the driver’s ability to brake or steer.

E2V has said their method doesn’t pose any greater threat than the alternatives, including but not limited to lethal force.

Tire spikes were specifically mentioned as they can be especially dangerous when used to stop motorcycles.

Another situation that could benefit from the technology is stopping vehicles that are believed to be filled with explosives.

Naturally, older cars that don’t have electrical systems are impervious to the device.

The company says they’ve already gotten inquiries from government agencies and security organizations.
