Stephanie Burnett, a teacher at Seminole Springs Elementary has discovered the perfect remedy for kids who squirm more than they focus.

She replaced all of the chairs in the classroom with yoga balls.

The purpose of the balls in exercise environments it to provide instability, thus requiring the body to compensate and actively take control. Over time, strength is built up.

In learning environments, there seems to be the added benefit of children not falling prey to distractions.

The teacher had to pay for the yoga balls herself, but the investment had yielded big returns.

Burnett says her 1st grade students pay more attention and are significantly more engaged during lessons.

Also, those who had previously been prone to taking unauthorized naps are managing to stay awake throughout the day.

Another bonus is that many have greatly improved their posture.

To avoid injuries, she has a strict feet-on-the floor policy in her classroom.

She’s not a tyrant, though – she does regularly allow the kids to indulge in 10-second stints of rolling and bouncing around.

Burnett said she doesn’t foresee going back to traditional chairs and desks any time in the future.
