Study Says Oreos Are Addictive

According to a new study, Oreo cookies are addictive just like cocaine and morphine.

According to a new study from Connecticut College in New London, Oreo brand cookies are addictive just like cocaine and morphine.
To test the addictiveness of Oreos, the researchers put hungry laboratory mice into a maze that had Oreos on one side, and rice cakes on the other side.

The rats seem to prefer the sweet frosting filled cookies to the bland rice cakes, and they reportedly ate the Oreos filling first.

Joseph Schroeder, assistant professor of neuroscience at Connecticut College said: “Our research supports the theory that high-fat, high-sugar foods stimulate the brain in the same way that drugs do. That may be one reason people have trouble staying away from them and it may be contributing to the obesity epidemic.”

The results of the study were compared with a similar test where one side of the maze gave the rats a saline injection and the other side gave them an injection of cocaine or morphine.

When allowed to choose a side of the maze, the rats spent more time on the side that gave them drugs, the same way they preferred the side that had Oreo cookies.
