Verizon Worker Locked in Underground Vault Without Air

An angry business owner faces numerous charges, including kidnapping, after locking a Verizon technician in the underground vault.

Several years ago, Verizon launched a popular ad campaign “Can You Hear Me Now?” to promote its phone network’s superior reliability and company’s high-quality service. Those claims were just put to an extreme test with one of their own technicians. Today, a Verizon worker is very thankful 911 responders could hear him now after he was locked in an airtight underground vault and seemingly left to die.

According to the 911 call, Mike Hathaway said he was in the vault working when the owner of Westboro Self Storage, 71-year-old Howard Cook, shouted something about parking Hathaway’s van on the grass and slammed the door closed. From that moment, no more oxygen could get in and the precious seconds ticked away while Hathaway waited for emergency responders to free him.

Cook now faces numerous charges that include kidnapping. He not only shut the door, but also took the ladder Hathaway would need to get out and put big, heavy rocks on the door to keep it shut.

There is no explanation at this time for Mr. Cook’s irrational behavior and bad mood that day.
