Elderly Residents in DC Metro Area Warned of Utility Worker Scam

Residents in Prince George's County, Maryland have been warned of a scam where men pose as utility workers to gain entry into private homes.
Utility workers are a common sight in neighborhoods across America.
Residents in Prince George’s County Maryland near Washington, DC have been warned of a scam where men pose as utility workers to gain entry into private homes.
Recently an elderly woman became a victim after she encountered a man at the door who claimed he worked for a water company.
He told her there could be a gas leak in the water lines so the unsuspecting lady let him inside. Once she was distracted, the fraudulent utility worker’s accomplice entered the house and stole money from the woman’s purse.
After the cash was taken, the utility imposter told the woman he had to check something on the second floor but he never returned. While the woman did not see the second suspect and therefore could not give a description, she said the first scammer was a white male in his 30s.
He wore a uniform during the theft and also displayed a badge. Another warning was recently issued to residents of Fairfax County after thefts were reported involving scammers posing as water utility workers.
It is not yet known if the incidents are related.
