Flight Delayed Due to Bee Swarm

An aircraft in North Carolina got stuck at the gate for approximately 2 hours due to a swarm of bees.

Weather and traffic are two common reasons for flight delays.

But a US Airways Express jet recently encountered an unexpected delay. The aircraft got stuck at the gate for approximately 2 hours due to a swarm of bees.

The size of the swarm was reported to be about the size of a basketball. The incident happened at Charlotte Douglas International Airport in North Carolina.

The insects swarmed a tug, which is the vehicle that pushes planes out from the gate.

A beekeeper soon arrived on scene to handle the situation. Thankfully, none of the bees made it inside the jet and no one was injured.

The bees weren't the only problem at the facility. A fire broke out on a moving walkway on Concourse E. As flames shot upwards, the nearby area was filled with clouds of smoke. An evacuation immediately followed.

For roughly 4 hours, almost half of the three dozen gates on the concourse were closed. Then there were the coyotes that caused a slight delay. An airport director summed it up best stating “Today has been a tough day.”
