Gilberto Guarino plays Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck: "Variations on Engelse Fortuijn".
Temperament: 1/4 comma meantone/A=443.
"Engelse Fortuijn" - (rooted in HsThysius 684-686). The melody, derived from an english anonym with the incipit "Fortune my Foe", was also set by William Byrd. It was, actually, one of the most popular english ballad tunes, to which many texts were set. In German, "Von der Fortuna werd Ich getrieben"; in Dutch, "Engelse Fortuijn", it came to be known as "The Hanging Tune", once such lyrics tend to the genre of gallows speeches by famous criminals. Besides, they include the story on which William Shakespeare based his "Titus Andronicus". Sweelinck's variations exhibit subtle but assertive changes of mood, through structural inner developments, as if illustrating the whims of Fortuna and her wheel.
