00:20APPLAUSE
00:32Hello, and welcome to Countdown.
00:34On this day in 1975, the film Jaws was released.
00:39The music, nearly as scary as the countdown clock.
00:45Yes, it does get people, actually.
00:47The first time they came on, they said,
00:49they actually play that in the studio.
00:51They thought they put it on in post.
00:53It was quite intimidating, even for them,
00:55so our contestants do very well.
00:57They do indeed.
00:59Guess who's back?
01:01My long-haired lover from Liverpool.
01:03LAUGHTER
01:05Have you missed me?
01:07Like a hole in the head, Anne.
01:09Thank you, Stephen!
01:11LAUGHTER
01:13We have to clarify that he doesn't actually live
01:16in Liverpool any more.
01:18He lives in Skem, which is hundreds of miles away.
01:22Culturally hundreds of miles away.
01:26Probably only about 15, isn't it?
01:28Yeah, about 15, yeah.
01:30Do you want to take us through the outfit?
01:32Well, you know, seeing as I've been away for a while,
01:3612 days is it now?
01:38Yeah.
01:40Hopefully it's a bit of a summer vibe,
01:42festival season and that.
01:44OK. Did you make the necklace yourself?
01:47I did indeed, yeah. Yeah, well spotted.
01:49Yeah? Yeah.
01:51Someone's Skip offered that up.
01:53No, they're actually from ring pulls from beer cans.
01:55Of course they are.
01:57This is just from today.
01:59LAUGHTER
02:01And your opponent today is Andrew.
02:04Andrew's not had to come very far, have you?
02:06No, just over the Ship Canal, Anne.
02:08Over the Ship Canal from Trafford.
02:10And what do you do, Andrew?
02:12I'm the leader of Trafford Council.
02:14That's very scary.
02:16I'm glad you're here to keep an eye on Stephen.
02:18I'll do my best.
02:20How long have you been leader?
02:22Just coming up to four years.
02:24And it's a Labour council?
02:26It is now, so we took control in 2018.
02:28OK.
02:30And no time for a proper job?
02:32I'm teasing you.
02:34Well, no, no, no, I do this full-time.
02:36I worked full-time as leader of the opposition,
02:38but just the council role now.
02:40What's the most difficult part about being leader of the council?
02:43Setting the budget. It's so difficult.
02:45There's so many different priorities,
02:47and it gets harder and harder each year.
02:49A round of applause for our contestants.
02:55And hello again to Robert Rinder.
02:57Hello again. Do you like Rob or Robert?
03:00I don't mind. I like the diminutive and the big one.
03:04And Robert has got two jobs.
03:07Rob is going to be Rob.
03:09And Robert is going to be Susie Dent,
03:11who sadly is off with Covid.
03:13Oh, no. What a kind thing,
03:15to be called Susie Dent.
03:17Isn't it lovely?
03:19A round of applause for him.

10:40MUSIC PLAYS
10:50MUSIC CONTINUES
11:10Stephen? Seven.
11:12Andrew? Six.
11:14What's your six? Radios.
11:16Towards... Any eights?
11:18No eights. I thought there was one.
11:20There feels like there should be one there.
11:22Distort. That's as good as we could do.
11:25Andrew, in the council chamber,
11:28how difficult is it to make everybody behave properly?
11:34Well, we've just had to do a new code of conduct, Anne, actually,
11:37but it can get a little heated at times,
11:39but generally, behaviour's pretty good.
11:41Why have you had to do a new code of conduct?
11:43I think all councils have gone through that process recently,
11:46but actually, you know, everybody's there to do the best for their area.
11:49We just disagree about how you do that, really.
11:52What do you believe in?
11:54Well, you know, so I would want more investment in our public services,
11:57more investment in supporting the most vulnerable.
12:00Others may focus on different priorities,
12:03so that's the nature of the beast, really.
12:06Yeah, but in terms of code of conduct, what have you had to rewrite?
12:10So there's been some additional emphasis on, you know,
12:15things like how we address each other in meetings,
12:18so talk through the chair, for instance, you know, address the chair.
12:24Nicely.
12:26Appropriately, yes, as we are with you today, Anne.
12:29Yeah, it would be more fun if you didn't address me nicely.
12:33What do people say to the chair when they're not addressing the chair nicely?
12:37Generally, it's just ignoring them that's the problem, you know,
12:40so people will get up when they've not been called to speak
12:42or, you know, sometimes lose their tempers
12:45and not address the mayor at all, so...
12:49I don't think Rob or I would make good councillors.
12:53Your numbers.
12:55Could I have one from the top and any of the five, please, Rachel?
12:58She's taking you down with her, Rob.
13:00One large, five and four.
13:02Thank you, Andrew.
13:04This round they are eight, ten, three, nine,
13:09another ten and a large one, 75.
13:12And the target, 247.
13:14247.
13:39MUSIC PLAYS
13:46Andrew?
13:48So, 247 not written down.
13:51Stephen? 248.
13:53Andrew?
13:55So, 75 plus eight.
13:5775 plus eight, 83.
13:59Sorry, multiplied by three.
14:01249.
14:03And then it's ten minus nine equals one.
14:09Yes.
14:11Sorry, I've gone wrong.
14:13Sorry, I think you may have used the number twice, possibly.
14:15OK, Stephen?
14:1775 times three.
14:1975 times three, 225.
14:22Plus ten, plus ten, plus three.
14:25Ten, ten, three, one above.
14:27Lovely.
14:29Rachel?
14:31Oh, no! I've just spotted Stephen.
14:33You've also... Well, you've used your three twice in the solution,
14:37so, unfortunately, you've both made a little blunder.
14:40It's the hat.
14:44Rachel?
14:46Well, I found a strange way to get there,
14:48but you could say three times ten is 30,
14:51add nine for 39, times that by eight for 312,
14:57and then add the second ten and take the 75.
15:00247.
15:02APPLAUSE
15:06Well done, Rachel.
15:08Rob, before you studied the law,
15:11you were at the National Youth Theatre, weren't you?
15:13I was, I was.
15:15It was a small problem there, Anne.
15:17I had very little talent was the difficulty.
15:19How long did it take you to understand that?
15:23Well, it wasn't so much at the National Youth Theatre where...
15:26How old were you?
15:28All right, guilty, I don't know.
15:30I mean, I was about 18 when I went to university.
15:34It wasn't the National Youth Theatre.
15:36And I thought I'd give it a second go.
15:38And I went to audition for this part and I thought,
15:41yeah, I'm not that bad.
15:43And then the next actor got up and I sat down and I thought,
15:46yeah, it's either the law or hair and make-up for me
15:49because this actor was so brilliant.
15:51It just sounded different, you know.
15:53And that turned out to be Benedict Cumberbatch,
15:55so I just gave up.
15:57That's wonderful.
15:58What was he performing at the time?
16:00He was Hildy in the front page.
16:02Yeah, it's a wonderful part.
16:04It's a great part, but he was just so great even then, you know.
16:07And did you become chums?
16:09Yeah, very good chums, he's a very good person.
16:11And probably a countdown fan, I would have thought.
16:13Loves words.
16:14OK, and you remained chums?
16:16Mm-hm.
16:17Yeah.
16:18Did you go on holiday together?
16:19No.
16:20Did you go clubbing together?
16:21I don't know.
16:22You see, the difficulty with me, Anna, is I'm not very cool.
16:24I can't imagine what club I'd go to.
16:26I'm more like, let's party like it's 1899, I prefer.
16:29I can't imagine us going to much of a club.
16:32Has he taken you to the Oscars?
16:34No, shockingly enough, and I have to say,
16:36I was desperately aggrieved about this, he took his wife.
16:39Oh!
16:40I mean, you know.
16:42You've known each other quite a few years.
16:44Yeah, before he was the sexiest man in the world.
16:46Yeah.
16:47I tell you.
16:48Could have been me, Ann.
16:50It could have been you, or maybe.
16:52Maybe.
16:53And what does he think of your career?
16:55Because you've done a lot of things, to be fair,
16:58that he hasn't done.
16:59That's true.
17:00I think, like all good friends,
17:02the barometer of good friendship, I think,
17:04isn't people that you can call in the middle of the night
17:07that will be there for you.
17:08Everyone says that.
17:09But the emergency services will show up for you there.
17:11It's when something wonderful happens
17:13and you've got that lovely group of people in your telephone,
17:16wherever it is, that you can call
17:18and they'll sit alongside you and celebrate first.
17:21And he's definitely amongst that group, which is lovely, isn't it?
17:24And if he had a legal problem, would he ring you first?
17:27Yes, but only privately.
17:28And I probably would know how to help him
17:30unless he'd gone and committed a war crime,
17:32which doesn't look likely.
17:34You have written a book on how to guide us with legal issues,
17:40haven't you?
17:41Yeah, trying to make the law accessible to all.
17:43Everybody can understand the law.
17:45It's everybody's law.
17:47Lawyers tend to overcomplicate things, Ann.
17:50Try to use jargon and to keep it out of reach of people
17:54in a way which is not always helpful.
17:56There are some areas of the law which are technical
17:58and you definitely need a lot of help with.
18:00But most cases, people can handle on their own
18:03as long as they've got a bit of objectivity and common sense.
18:06Give me an example of something where you don't think
18:08you should have to bother with lawyers.
18:10You should be able to sort it out.
18:12It depends on how tricky the issue is and how long it's gone on for
18:15and whether or not it's a technical issue.
18:17Most of the time, it's a straightforward issue.
18:19Has the builder provided the service to a reasonably competent standard?
18:23As long as you've got somebody who's a decent expert
18:25that can help you, as long as you remember it's for you
18:28to prove the case on the balance of probability
18:30so a judge is more sure than not,
18:32and you approach it in a kind of sensible way,
18:34you're likely to get a helpful, sensible outcome.
18:36Judges and courts are there to do their best to help people,
18:39especially if they're there without lawyers.
18:41I think I'd hire you.
18:42Oh, that would be good. Can you imagine the two of us showing up?
18:45Yeah. That would shake the walls, wouldn't it?
18:47Rob Rinder, thank you.
18:5328-17.
18:55Stephen, your letters.
18:57A consonant, please, Rachel.
18:59Thank you, Stephen.

19:25Erm...
19:27I'll have a final vowel, please, actually.
19:30A final E.
19:32Let's play Countdown.

20:20I couldn't do any better.
20:21OK.
20:22So, Andrew, when you're not bossing them around
20:24in the council chamber, what do you get up to for fun?
20:28I follow quite a lot of cricket,
20:30so Lancashire Cricket Club's just across the road
20:32from my office at the Town Hall.
20:35I've been around the world watching the England cricket team,
20:38so I'm a big cricket fan.
20:40Do you play cricket?
20:41Not very well, and not so much these days.
20:44OK.
20:45And what about football?
20:47I'm a Manchester City fan.
20:49Well, there's a whole quietness going on here.
20:51There is, and a big exhale from Rob.
20:53Rob knows what that means.
20:55Your letters.
20:56A consonant, please, Rachel.
20:57Thank you, Andrew.

22:05In that case, I'll go for igloos.
22:07Both good, yeah.
22:09Anything different over there?
22:11There's moil as well, which is a different meaning
22:13from the one that I thought.
22:15It's only a four-letter word.
22:16It's men who moiled for gold.
22:18It's also the name of the word who does religious circumcision.
22:22But not spelt like that.
22:24OK.
22:25Thank you.
22:26Stephen, your numbers.
22:28I think I've been here long enough now to say the usual, please, Rachel.
22:31The usual.
