01:06I remember the NHS scene because it was clever and it was beautiful
01:10and it was funny and it was poignant and it was, for me,
01:13the best there's ever been. Do you even remember it?
01:16Were you old enough? I remember my friend Siobhan was in it.
01:19I was doing all the rehearsals and she'd volunteered and she...
01:22I can't remember what on earth she did in it,
01:24but she was very dedicated to practising and getting it all right
01:27and, yeah, a bit of an experience.

01:31I went to see some hockey, I think, some ladies' hockey, possibly.
01:34I might have seen Holland play. I mean, it's all a bit fuzzy now,
01:37but it was nice just to be there and, like you say, the atmosphere

01:42And the Paralympics as well sold a record amount of tickets.

24:39and I'm going to look at some of the Amazons,
24:42the women who did absolutely fantastically at the Olympics.
24:45So, Jessica Innes, Laura Trott, Nicola Adams, Lizzie Armistead,
24:49Sophie Hoskin, Catherine Copeland.
24:51There were just so many amazing,
24:53what I would call Amazon warriors at sport.
24:55They were fantastic.
24:56I'm going to talk about the Amazon warriors
24:59and they were a legendary race of women
25:01and they were renowned for their fighting skills
25:03and they were immortalised, of course, in Wonder Woman.
25:06Wonder Woman, the Amazon warrior and the daughter of Hippolyta,
25:10who was Queen of Paradise Island,
25:12sent her child to the US in the fight against hate
25:15and the fight against oppression.
25:17And she says, in America, you will indeed be a Wonder Woman.
25:21So Diana Prince was then introduced to the world.
25:25Back to the Amazons, though.
25:26They were believed to have their origins in Greek mythology
25:29until, quite recently, when archaeological research
25:32unearthed evidence of women
25:34at least fitting the description of the Amazons,
25:36and I'll come to that, living as far back as the 9th century BC.
25:40And they belonged to this nomadic Eurasian race
25:43and they were known for their horsewomanship
25:46and their skill with the bow and arrow.
25:49They fought on horseback alongside the men
25:51and they have been found buried alongside their weapons.
25:54You can see their injuries are consistent with battle wounds.
25:57But they were incredibly strong and very, very powerful.
26:01And the etymology of the word has become quite notorious, really,
26:04because some people think it goes back to the Greek
26:07for lacking and breast.
26:09And the idea was that they would cut off one of their own breasts
26:13in order to improve their bow-womanship, if you like.
26:18But, unfortunately, etymologically that doesn't quite hang together
26:23because there's no physical evidence, either,
26:25that they did cut off one of their breasts.
26:27And we think, linguists think, that it actually goes back
26:30to either an ancient Iranian word, meaning one fighting together,
26:34or a far, far more ancient root, which, again, was all about battle.
26:38But they have inspired us for absolutely centuries,
26:41including those brilliant athletes at London 2012.
