00:00Why didn't Athena just fire all Xena?
00:07I know!
00:08Go figure! I know!
00:12You know, Athena had a grudging admiration for Xena.
00:17And I think, you know, push came to shove and that was the end of it.
00:23She's not a, I don't, I didn't feel like Athena was necessarily maternal.
00:29Like, I don't think it was necessarily a pleasant thing she had to do,
00:32but I think it was something she felt that she had to do.
00:43In relationship to...
00:53Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:00Yeah.
01:06I think that there's a switch when you're Athena
01:11that just doesn't quite see the problem as big as it were.
01:17I mean, obviously, Xena's a mother.
01:20But I think she says at one stage,
01:22look, I won't hurt her, I'll do it quickly, or worse to that effect.
01:26You know, just look...
01:29It was a black and white decision.
01:31That's kind of it, I think, for her.
01:35I don't think she wanted to, but I think that, you know,
01:40she didn't really feel she had a choice.
01:43And at the end of the day, she didn't, because she ended up dying, so...
01:46I don't want to seem like a bad guy.
01:49Have you had any special affinity for that goddess because of that?
01:53Special what, sorry?
01:54Affinity.
01:55Like, have you thought any more about the actual Greek goddess, or it was...
01:59Oh, well, funnily enough, at the time, I was doing ten plays,
02:04ten Greek plays over two nights,
02:06all about the Greek gods when I was cast in this.
02:09Wow.
02:10And I think that's part of the reason that I got the job,
02:12because the names of the Greek gods were so familiar to me.
02:15And I walked in there, and I made them sound like they really existed, I think,
02:20because it was just normal, because I'd been doing this play for seven months.
02:24Wow.
02:25So, I mean, I don't think I necessarily look...
02:29I couldn't believe I got the role to tell you the truth,
02:31because I'm not kidding you, about five girls in front of me,
02:34and probably some of you have heard this story.
02:37Too bad, not all of you.
02:41There were about five girls in front of me,
02:43and they were all big and sort of overtly kind of beautiful women,
02:49and they were all sort of doing sword fighting before they were going in and whatnot.
02:54And one girl came up to me and sat down beside me and said,
02:58isn't that girl beautiful?
03:00I'm just not going to give a fuck, because she's going to get it.
03:04And I just thought, what am I, chopped liver?
03:07Do you feel so comfortable saying that to me?
03:10Why do you feel so comfortable saying that to me?
03:12And I ended up comforting her.
03:14I think what I enjoyed the most was being fairly pixie-like,
03:19and being just kind of...
03:24Do I have any new projects coming up?
03:27Well, I just finished doing a play back in the Theatre Royal in England,
03:32and...
03:33Oh, thank you.
03:34Yes, it was a good success.
03:37It was very, very good.
03:39And we're going to do Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.
03:43So...
03:45That's the next thing.
03:49Hello.
03:50I was wondering, what was it like putting on your costume,
03:53like having to wear it for like 12 hours a day,
03:55and like cold news or hot news or whatever?
03:58Well, first of all, it was really comfortable.
04:01Those girls had been making these costumes,
04:03and the guys had been making them for what, like five years by the time I got there,
04:06so it was surprisingly comfortable.
04:10And kind of fun having such a big cleavage.
04:15Somebody came up to me and said,
04:17how did they cast all these girls with really big boobies?
04:20And I said, I don't know, just lucky, I guess.
04:27That helmet that I wore,
04:29there was a fan at a convention that I did in London,
04:33and it was the following morning,
04:35and it was the end of the convention.
04:38And...
04:41You know, I don't know why,
04:43but I thought that was the funniest thing I had ever heard.
04:46I was laughing so hard that the guy who was organizing the convention
04:49thought I was crying over it.
04:52So that one goes down in folklore for me.
04:57Hi.
04:58Hi.
04:59Do you think that people would recognize you more from your Xena roles
05:02or from your other roles?
05:06Well,
05:09I think I don't know the answer to that question.
05:14I've done so many things where I looked so different
05:18that it didn't actually stay on my head, this particular take.
05:21And it sort of flew off
05:24with me sort of effing and blinding afterwards.
05:29No, it wasn't heavy, and it didn't bother me.
05:32And I did get sort of little blonde dreadlocky things down the side,
05:35which was kind of cool.
05:37So what's your name?
05:38Rachel.
05:39And how old were you when you started watching the show, Rachel?
05:44How old are you now?
05:46I think I'm...
05:48I'm nine, and I think I was still nine.
05:52You were nine when you started watching the show?
05:55Yes.
05:56So you're a recent fan.
05:58So you're possibly the youngest and newest fan.
06:02Yeah?
06:03I think that's kind of great.
06:07I've been talking to my friend's cat, can you tell?
06:09I keep going, hi!
06:15Hiya.
06:16Where are you from?
06:18Yes, I know, it's kind of a Mongol accent, isn't it?
06:22I was born in London.
06:23I was raised in Australia.
06:25And then I moved back to London.
06:27And in the ten years I've been away from Australia,
06:30I've only ever played English or American.
06:36So I think each word has its own history.
06:40I don't think there's any symmetry to it.
06:44And did you audition here or in New Zealand?
06:46I auditioned here.
06:48Yeah.
06:51Okay.
06:53Hi.
06:54Hi.
06:55I went to see Tantalus twice in Denver,
06:58and I wanted to tell you what a fabulous play that is.
07:02And I wanted to know if you were in Denver,
07:05or if you did the London version of Tantalus.
07:07I didn't do it.
07:08What's Tantalus?
07:09Oh, I'm sorry, I thought you were in the...
07:11You talked about being in a ten-hour production,
07:14a ten-hour play.
07:15Yeah, it was called The Greeks.
07:16Maybe, was it ten plays?
07:18I think it's the same play.
07:19Maybe it's a different adaptation.
07:22That's probably what it is.
07:23Yeah, it was the Royal Shakespeare Company.
07:25Oh, right.
07:26Was Iffit and I, can you remember the characters?
07:28Yes.
07:29Yeah, that's who I play as.
07:30Oh, yeah, okay.
07:32Well, I just wanted to ask you
07:34if they were going to do it in Greece,
07:36or if you know if they were going to...
07:39What, the production that I was in?
07:41Right, right.
07:42I did that four years ago, I think.
07:44Oh, when they were working on it.
07:45Yeah, I mean, it's such a big cast.
07:47We had like 30 people with them.
07:49I think the fact that we actually managed to get it together
07:51and do it was, in itself,
07:53I think we won an award for best ensemble play
07:56or something, rather, that year.
07:58I think just because there were so many of us
08:00not bumping into each other on the stage, you know.
08:03That was wonderful.
08:04And also, I wanted to tell you
08:05that you look a whole lot taller.
08:07How does it feel?
08:09You're getting on the screen.
08:10Thanks.
08:11Thanks.
08:14It was the helmet.
08:15It was the helmet.
08:25The director, when I first was doing this scene,
08:29we came out of a tent that I might be
08:32plucking
08:34something from my...
08:39I thought it was a question.
08:42So we just went with the subtext of that instead.
08:49I think the relationship with Musetta was...
08:55I always think that Athena kind of
08:59had feelings for her in spite of herself.
09:02I don't think that happened to her very often.
09:05And I would almost wager that
09:07probably hadn't happened before.
09:10I mean, she wasn't even...
09:13Pardon?
09:14She kept it quite good.
09:15She did?
09:16She did?
09:17No, I think she really...
09:19I mean, she really, really loved her.
09:21I think to her detriment, almost, as well.
09:25And I think it seems to me,
09:26because I wasn't familiar with the show beforehand,
09:28but it seems to me that's not a usual thing for the gods.
09:32Am I right in saying that?
09:33Yeah.
09:34They don't normally have
09:36kind of human feelings, if you like.
09:38And the fact that Musetta and I
09:39got on really well helped, too.
09:41She's really, really tall, too.
09:49So, is there anything...
09:51Did I kind of sort of answer it all?
09:54Yeah, I just think she's...
09:58She was very, very, very, very fond of her.
10:06Thanks.
10:09Hi.
10:11I just listened to your Anne Mack's audiobook.
10:13Oh, yeah.
10:14Did you enjoy doing the voice work?
10:16Oh, I did.
10:17I enjoyed it a lot.
10:19I enjoyed working with the guys so much,
10:21and I got to be two people, too.
10:25I don't know if you know,
10:26but in the very beginning,
10:27there's an English accent.
10:28Because I'm playing American,
10:29but the English accent at the beginning is me, as well.
10:31Yeah, I didn't know that.
10:32Yeah.
10:33I loved it.
10:34I loved it,
10:35because you don't have to get made up.
10:37You just walk into a recording studio
10:39and record a play that someone's written,
10:41and it's fantastic,
10:42because usually, you know,
10:43you're getting called at 5.30 in the morning
10:45or something,
10:46and you're sitting in front of fluoro lights,
10:47and you look like hell,
10:48and then someone's trying to make you
10:49not look like hell.
10:52So, to go in and do a radio play
10:55and a recording like that
10:56was really, for that reason,
10:58as well as the fact that I enjoyed it,
10:59was fantastic.
11:01Can we do another one?
11:02I think we are going to do another one.
11:04Yeah.
11:05Yeah.
11:06I don't know.
11:07He's written something for me.
11:11I think it's called...
11:13Well, I think the name's changed,
11:14but it's kind of a whodunit murder mystery.
11:17So, we might be doing that this year, too.
11:22Oh, hi.
11:24I mean, just fantastic.
11:26I mean, probably...
11:29A couple of scenes I had with him,
11:31I think probably were the most enjoyable for me
11:35because we had on screen
11:39a really sort of antagonistic, I suppose,
11:43sort of relationship.
11:44But off screen, we got on really, really well.
11:46And, you know, just fantastic,
11:51fantastic, fantastic man.
11:54Kind of words don't say enough, really.
11:58Beg your pardon?
12:02Yeah, yeah, yeah.
12:05Yes.
12:10Oh, hi.
12:12If they had not killed you,
12:16and you were asked to do more,
12:20and you agreed,
12:21do you think she would still have been
12:25a pseudo-villain antagonist?
12:27Or do you think she would have somehow been
12:32supportive of
12:34Xena and Gabrielle's
12:38good works?
12:40Oh, I think she would have been supportive.
12:43No, I think she would have...
12:44Yeah, if she had survived
12:46and worked out some sort of truce,
12:48if they could have done that,
12:49I think she would have been supportive.
12:51Absolutely.
12:52Would it have been as much fun, do you think?
12:55Or did you like playing that?
12:57Well, you know,
12:58writers never write that everything's peachy keen.
13:01You know, so I probably would have been nice
13:03for a nanosecond.
13:05You know?
13:07And then,
13:09you know,
13:10something else would have happened and,
13:13you know,
13:14I think they were going to kill me one way or another,
13:16you know,
13:17unfortunately.
13:18But,
13:19I think she would have been supportive,
13:21but probably written out of the storyline,
13:23she would have been supportive in a distant cloud somewhere.
13:25You know?
13:29Hi.
13:30I'm just curious,
13:31what was it like for you to play the action adventure scenes
13:34and the battles and all of that?
13:37Did everyone,
13:38can everyone hear the questions?
13:40Can you hear them in the back?
13:42Oh, okay, I'll repeat them then.
13:44What was it like doing the fighting?
13:47It was great.
13:49Well, first of all,
13:50it was quite difficult because
13:51when I first arrived in New Zealand,
13:52I had bronchitis and I couldn't
13:55breathe very well and
13:58I didn't tell the fight,
13:59the fight guy
14:00and I think he just thought I was this tremendous wimp
14:03because
14:04I stood up to ten seconds,
14:05it sounded like I was this
14:06chronic smoker.
14:07You know?
14:11But once I got the hang of it
14:13and didn't quite look like I was constipated
14:15when I was doing these,
14:17you know,
14:19there's like one scene when I
14:21locking swords with Kevin,
14:23it's in the first episode,
14:24my face is like this.
14:28And then I understood,
14:29oh, that's what they mean about,
14:31you know, sitting back and looking relaxed and so forth.
14:35And so by the end,
14:36when I was doing the final fight scene with Lucy,
14:39that I really, really enjoyed because
14:42it's just kind of a blast
14:44to know that you're going to
14:45hit someone with your sword
14:47and they're going to do triple somersaults
14:49with the air.
14:50I'm looking through.
14:52You know, it's
14:53in my private fantasy.
14:58I really enjoyed it.
14:59I loved it.
15:00I did.
15:02Hi.
15:04The first time I saw you was at Dragon Con.
15:06Oh yeah.
15:07And I was wondering,
15:08obviously you went to acting school,
15:09they never mentioned the conventions.
15:11I was wondering how you
15:13thought about
15:14how you first thought a convention would be
15:16and how
15:18how your attitude would change.
15:21And how what, sorry?
15:22How your attitude, if
15:24if your expectations
15:25Oh, okay.
15:27Basically,
15:28how did I find my first convention
15:30and what did I expect of it?
15:32I was so nervous.
15:34My first convention was in England
15:36and I just
15:37kind of
15:38studded my way through the first hour
15:40and went like
15:43But what was fantastic about it
15:45and what I would really enjoy about it
15:47is when you're filming
15:49it honestly feels like
15:50the only people that see
15:51what you're doing
15:52is the cameraman,
15:54the director
15:55and maybe your mother.
15:57You don't get the sensation.
15:59It's not like doing a stage play
16:01where you're aware
16:02that people are watching you
16:03and you get feedback.
16:04And so
16:05to do a convention
16:06and have people come up to me
16:07and say,
16:08well, you know when you said blah blah blah
16:09what were you thinking?
16:10And I thought blah blah blah.
16:12I loved that.
16:13I just loved it.
16:15Because it didn't feel so lonely.
16:17I think filming can be
16:18kind of an isolated experience
16:20and when you're talking to people
16:21that have a genuine interest
16:22and an intelligent interest in it too
16:26it's very satisfying.
16:27So I
16:29well there you are.
16:30I
16:33I was
16:35I was really pleased to be there
16:37and they were so warm too
16:39because
16:40the first one I
16:42just admitted I stood up there
16:43and went this is my first one
16:44and I'm
16:45I'm really nervous so
16:46you just have to bear with me.
16:48But I enjoyed it very much.
16:53Hi.
16:54Hi.
16:57Yeah.
17:00Oh, that's nice of you to ask that way.
17:02That's so sweet.
17:03You're asking if my mother's still alive
17:05sort of thing?
17:11She's still alive.
17:15She lives in London.
17:22Oh, she is.
17:31Oh, thank you.
17:34Oh.
17:36I don't know if you know the play.
17:37There was a film made of it
17:38with Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino
17:40and the stage production
17:41is quite different.
17:42This is the thing I was doing
17:43in the Theatre Royal.
17:44It's a relationship over
17:46over one night
17:47with two people
17:48that have got so much armour on
17:50that it's funny and painful
17:51and all that kind of business.
17:53And my mum usually
17:54Oh, God, I'm getting upset.
17:55Don't do that.
17:56My mum
18:03I'm embarrassing.
18:07My mum
18:11My mother usually
18:12has a great big smile
18:13on her face because
18:24She'd love this moment.
18:27Okay, I'm just going to
18:28breathe for a moment.
18:30She usually has a huge
18:31smile on her face
18:32but the look on her face
18:33she was crying at the end
18:35and she
18:37Yeah.
18:40She's a caller.
18:41Oh, God.
18:49Oh, my God.
18:50I wasn't quite expecting that.
18:55The helmet's not holding
18:56my head together.
18:59That's why they designed it
19:00because they thought
19:01she's really good
19:02but can she hold it together?
19:05The helmet's in my head.
19:08Oh, thank you.
19:10It's just Boardwalk City.
19:11I'm here.
19:14I hope this is recorded
19:15so I can show that to my mum.
19:19Yeah?
19:20What episodes of Poirot
19:21have you been on
19:22and what part did you play?
19:24The question was
19:26what episodes of Poirot
19:28did I do?
19:30It was an episode called
19:31Hickory Dickory Dock
19:33and I played an American spy
19:36who was doubling
19:37as an American lit student.
19:40Wow.
19:41Yeah, it was lovely.
19:42It's lovely.
19:43I love doing period stuff.
19:44Most, I'd say at least
19:45half of the film work
19:46that I've done
19:47has been period.
19:48Anything from the 17th century
19:50up to 1950s
19:52and I enjoyed that so much
19:54so it was lovely to do.
19:56And David Suchet's
19:57just a gem.
19:58Really lovely man.
20:00So, thank you.
20:02Hi.
20:03Hi.
20:04They say that humour
20:05is the nickname for wisdom
20:06so can you talk a little bit
20:07about the sense of humour
20:08of the Goddess of Wisdom?
20:14Just a working actress.
20:18Just an actress.
20:21Well, I think
20:22if she was funny
20:25it was a somewhat
20:26sort of nonchalant attitude
20:27that she
20:30was kind of better
20:31than everybody.
20:33You know, I think
20:35there was funny moments
20:36between her and Ares
20:41where she's just so sure
20:42she's going to succeed
20:44and she's
20:45she's quite flippant about it.
20:46I mean, the
20:48how's it going with the
20:50bombing of the cows?
20:51What is that?
20:56One can only imagine
20:57these like
21:00So, there really
21:01there was humour there.
21:02I think it was kind of what
21:05came out of any of the scenes
21:06that I was working with
21:07particularly with Kevin, I think.
21:09Yeah.
21:12Hi.
21:14Hi.
21:15I was wondering
21:16what your dream project
21:17would be
21:18and with whom?
21:20Oh, my dream project.
21:21Who would that be with?
21:23In what aspect?
21:26Do you mean
21:28Do you mean work parts?
21:30Everything!
21:34Let's see.
21:35My dream project.
21:36It's always one of those
21:37questions that you love
21:38being asked
21:39and it's really boring
21:40for everyone to listen to
21:41because you go
21:42Well, let me think about it.
21:49It's like
21:50what are your five favourite movies?
21:51People love being asked that
21:52but they
21:53never get around to the five.
21:55I've talked so much
21:56I never have a question on that.
21:59Dream project.
22:00I think
22:01if I could be
22:02in the same film
22:04as Daniel Day-Lewis
22:06that would make me
22:07pretty bloody happy.
22:10That would be
22:11my dream person.
22:12He's probably
22:13the only person
22:14that I would
22:15I would
22:16go to see a film
22:17regardless of what
22:18the review had been
22:19I think.
22:21Yeah.
22:22And I'm so glad
22:23and I'm so excited
22:24about seeing Gainesville.
22:25What is it?
22:26Gainesville, New York.
22:27Yeah.
22:29Any other questions?
22:31Anyone just
22:32dying to ask
22:33but are too shy?
22:46Nah.
22:47I don't remember it.
22:49Did I say that?
22:51What's the question?
22:53The question is
22:54do I remember
22:55yelling out
22:56Celesta?
22:57When did I do that?
23:05Oh
23:06right.
23:07Gosh.
23:11She was really annoying.
23:13She wouldn't do
23:14what I said.
23:18She was really
23:19a really
23:20really nice girl.
23:21What a great girl.
23:22Yeah.
23:23I do remember
23:24saying that to her.
23:25It's like I think that
23:26Athena doesn't
23:27probably
23:29she didn't get
23:30thrown very often
23:31and
23:32it really
23:33bugged her
23:34that this girl
23:35wouldn't do what she said.
23:36So
23:39I wanted to kill her
23:40for that.
23:43And I asked
23:44if I could.
23:47So
23:50has anyone ever
23:51mentioned
23:52that you were
23:53kind of like
23:54Leslie Ann Doe?
23:55Oh God.
23:56I'm going to say
23:57that one out loud.
23:59Apparently I look like
24:00Leslie Ann Doe.
24:02No?
24:04I think she's
24:05lovely.
24:06She's got
24:07dog hair
24:08and dog eyes
24:09isn't she?
24:11Oh
24:12really?
24:13Oh
24:14thanks.
24:16Hi.
24:17Hi.
24:18What were some of
24:19your most memorable
24:20moments working
24:21with Lucy and Rene
24:22either on or
24:23off camera?
24:26I think
24:27let me think
24:28let me think
24:29what were my
24:30sort of
24:31finest moments
24:32that I enjoyed
24:33the most with
24:34Lucy and Rene?
24:35Well first of all
24:36both of those girls
24:37are
24:38probably two of
24:39the nicest people
24:40I have ever
24:41worked with.
24:42I was so impressed
24:43by
24:44how lovely
24:45they were
24:46and it all
24:47came together
24:48in one
24:49shot.
24:50How lovely
24:51the crew
24:52were
24:53how welcoming
24:54Lucy had a
24:55party in her
24:56place and
24:57it's very funny
24:58in New Zealand
24:59actually.
25:00This is not
25:01answering the
25:02question at all
25:03but what
25:04has everyone
25:05heard of that
25:06phrase six
25:07degrees of
25:08separation?
25:09There's only
25:10apparently six
25:11degrees of
25:12separation
25:13between you
25:14and you know
25:15Joe Blow
25:16God I forgot
25:17what I was
25:18going to say.
25:19Oh yeah
25:20that's right.
25:21I went up
25:22to the Bay
25:23of Islands
25:24and you know
25:25I was feeling
25:26pretty good
25:27about the fact
25:28that I'd been
25:29invited to
25:30Lucy's house
25:31this year.
25:32It was really
25:33nice and
25:34everything
25:35and there
25:36was this guy
25:37the Bay of
25:38Islands
25:39are north
25:40and because
25:41I had a few
25:42days off here
25:43and there
25:44I took myself
25:45to this
25:46hostel
25:47you know
25:48those like
25:49you pay $20
25:50or something
25:51for the night
25:52and everyone's
25:53got bags
25:54and there's
25:555,000 people
25:56in your room
25:57sort of thing.
25:58Anyway
25:59there was a
26:00bar there
26:01and there's
26:02a guy
26:03walked in
26:04and he
26:05lives in
26:06the bush
26:07and he
26:08walked something
26:09like 15
26:10miles or
26:11something
26:12through the
26:13bush
26:14and he
26:15walked
26:16and worked
26:17doing something
26:18in the bush
26:19had a beer
26:20the whole thing
26:21going on
26:22and we were
26:23talking about
26:24what I was
26:25doing
26:26and I said
26:27and a part
26:28of me thought
26:29oh do I
26:30say I'm doing
26:31Xena
26:32because sometimes
26:33for whatever
26:34reason
26:35I just don't
26:36want to talk
26:37about it
26:38because it
26:39makes me
26:40feel a bit
26:41uncomfortable
26:42sometimes
26:43and I
