Obama, Romney battle over foreign policy in last debate

U.S. President Barack Obama accused Republican challenger Mitt Romney of sending mixed messages on foreign policy in their third and final presidential debate.

Obama said Romney was seeking to return the United States to the Cold War.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING:

"The Cold War has been over for 20 years. When it comes to your foreign policy, you seem to want to import the foreign policies of the 1980s."

Romney, said Obama's policies toward the Middle East and North Africa were not stopping a resurgent threat from al Qaeda.

(SOUNDBITE)(English) REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE MITT ROMNEY SAYING:

"We can't kill our way out of this mess. We're going to have to put in place a very comprehensive and robust strategy to help the world of Islam and other parts of the world to reject this radical violent extremism."

Ahead of the debate, the two candidates were tied at 46 percent each in the Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll. Other surveys show a similar picture.
