The Spanish Super Cup saw a match that sent sparks flying as Spain’s two powerhouses faced off on August 23rd.
The much-anticipated match between Spanish rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid kept fans on the edge of their seats but finally Barcelona pulled ahead to beat Madrid 3-2.

The match really heated up during the second half when both teams started scoring.

Ronaldo scored a powerful header from a Mesut Ozil corner to put Madrid in the lead.

That lead was not held for long though, as Barcelona’s Pedro slipped in a goal to tie the two teams.

Then Messi scored from the penalty spot, taking Barcelona into the lead.

Barcelona solidified its position with a close range goal from Xavi for a 3-1 score.

And yet in the last 5 minutes, against the run of play, De Maria scored for Real, earning them a crucial second away goal.

This means that a 1-0 win in the second leg will be enough to make them champions.

After the match Barcelona defender Gerard Pique spoke of his expectations for the return game:

[Gerard Pique, Barcelona Defender]:
“I think it will be a very open match because after the 3-2 everyone can win. They can win, we can win. We'll see. I think it will be a great game for all the people who follow us and who follow them and we will try to beat them.”

The conclusion of the Spanish Super Cup will be held at Real's Bernabeu Stadium next Thursday.
